SPORTS SHORTS: Three Mustangs triumph in own Early Bird Relays

LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ track and field team captured three individual events on its way to third place at its own Early Bird Relays on Tuesday evening.

Lynnville-Sully captured the team title with 166 points, while Iowa Valley (92.5), East Marshall (87), Dike-New Hartford (82) and Woodward-Granger (78.5) gave chase atop the nine-team meet. BCLUW (24) led the chase group in sixth place.

East Marshall’s event victories came from Eli Burns in the long jump, Cael Curphy in the 400-meter dash, and Blake Neuroth in the 400 hurdles. Burns won with a leap of 21 feet; Curphy claimed his race in 53.06 seconds; and Neuroth was the only runner to break one minute (59.02) in the 400 hurdles.

The Mustangs took silver in the sprint medley, as Neuroth, Kaden Good, Trent Criswell and Kaden Grant got second in 1:42.84. East Marshall also was second in the 4×400 as Burns, Criswell, Grant and Curphy crossed in 3:45.43.

Curphy was third in the 200 (23.76), while Burns got bronze in the 110 high hurdles (15.53).

BCLUW was led by bronze-medal performances for Vance Hoyt in the long jump (19-7 1/2), Daniel Zoske in the discus (132-7), and Tommy Hinderhofer in the 400 (55.21).

The Comet quartet of Hoyt, Maddin Helms, Owen Case and Eathan Petermeier picked up fifth in the 4×200 (1:40.85). Zoske also earned sixth in the shot put (40-5), as did Petermeier in the 100 (11.67).

Wolverines chase the pack in debut at Colfax-Mingo

COLFAX — The GMG girls’ track and field team finished ninth out of as many teams at the Colfax-Mingo Co-Ed to open the spring season Tuesday.

The Wolverines scored 29 points in a meet that was led by Collins-Maxwell with 112, Baxter (109), Colfax-Mingo (105) and BGM (101).

Skyler Murty led GMG with a second-place finish, scoring silver in the shot put with a heave of 33 feet, 5 inches. She also scored fourth in the discus with a toss of 88-7. Arianna Pierce placed fifth in the shot put (31-3) and eighth in the discus (83-6).

Bryleigh Bartel earned GMG’s top finish on the track, finishing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute, 39.38 seconds. Taelyn Sash took sixth in the long jump (13-8) and seventh in the 800 (2:42.83).

The Wolverines’ sprint medley team of Josie Parks, Addison Elmore, Gracie Peak and Sash scored seventh in 2:10.73, while the 4×200 foursome of Riah Boege, Murty, Joleesa Vazquez and Pierce placed eighth in 2:15.43.

Bobcat boys narrowly miss team title at DM East

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team missed out on first place by one point at its season-opening Don Graves/Lee Town Relays on Saturday at Duke Williams Stadium.

Fort Dodge led the field with 129 points, followed by Marshalltown’s 128 and Ottumwa’s 126. Des Moines Lincoln (78), Des Moines North (64) and host Des Moines East (54) rounded out the competition.

Bobcat senior Carter Nunn captured the distance triple by winning the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. He claimed the 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 4.9 seconds, the 1,600 title in 4:57.21, and the 3,200 in 10:38.17.

Myles Goldman got second in the 1,600 (5:03.58) and Thomas Stanley ran a personal-best 11:21.36 to score second in the 3,200.

The Marshalltown quartet of Fernando Garcia, Carson Daters, Jordan Haynes and John Schoenfelder finished atop the field in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:14.69), and the foursome of Costin Piscitelli, Goldman, Kade Randall and Larrs Schoenfelder scored victory in the 4×800 relay (9:10.27).

Daters took second in the 110-meter high hurdles (18.75), while Aiden Smitherman was second in the 400 hurdles (1:01.15). Evan Anderson was third in the 100 (11.89), and Kieron Sharp was third in the 400 (55.68).

The Bobcats finished third or better in all but one relay race, adding runner-up finishes in the distance medley (Smitherman, Larrs Schoenfelder, Declan Greene, Michael Downs) and the 4×400 (Greene, Larrs Schoenfelder, Downs, Randall).
