SPORTS SHORTS: Warner joins Hawkeye wrestling coaching staff

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa head wrestling coach Tom Brands announced Friday that former Hawkeye and five-time All-American Jacob Warner has joined the program’s coaching staff as a temporary assistant coach.

“Jacob knows what it takes to compete at the highest level, both on and off the mat,” said Brands. “He represents everything Iowa wrestling stands for. His toughness, discipline and relentless work ethic will be a tremendous asset to our staff and our student-athletes.”

Warner fills the position previously occupied by Bobby Telford.

A native of Tolono, Ill., Warner became just the third wrestler in program history to earn All-America honors five times. Competing at 197 pounds, he finished his collegiate career with a 97-28 overall record.

Warner was the 2022 NCAA runner-up and helped lead Iowa to the 2021 NCAA team championship, along with Big Ten Conference team titles in 2020 and 2021.

Warner was a five-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a three-time NWCA Academic All-America Team member. He is a two-time graduate of the University of Iowa, earning his bachelor’s degree in finance in 2021 and a master of science in business analytics in 2023.

Prior to his collegiate career, Warner was a three-time Illinois high school state champion.

Rutgers wrestling lands former Cyclone heavyweight Herrera

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Rutgers wrestling team filled a hole in the portal on Sunday, as former Iowa State heavyweight Daniel Herrera announced that he has committed to the Scarlet Knights out of the transfer portal.

The Iowa State transfer shared a post via Instagram to make it official. He will join Rutgers with three years of eligibility remaining.

Herrera redshirted as former national champion Yonger Batisda returned to his spot in the lineup. As a true freshman, Herrera went 29-15 and finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships, qualifying for the national tournament.

Herrera will replace Hunter Catka, who transferred to Virginia Tech this offseason. Catka lost in sudden victory in the blood round this year for the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers also holds a commit from Malvern Prep’s Lukas Zalota. He is one of the top heavyweights in the nation as a junior.

Herrera was ranked No. 35 overall in the Class of 2024 by MatScouts.

Starting at $4.38/week.
