The Marshalltown girls’ golf team secured the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division’s regular-season title on Tuesday, edging Ames by one stroke in a nine-hole dual meet at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
The Bobcats improved to 3-0 in the Alliance North thanks to a 179-180 victory over the visiting Little Cyclones.
MHS sophomore Morgan Hilderbrand posted the runner-up medalist round of 4-over-par 40 to lead the team to victory, trailing only the 38 shot by Jessie Lohman of Ames. Lone senior Harper Wilson finished out with a 45 for the fourth-lowest score of the dual, followed by Emma Clawson (46) and Hanna Osgood (48).
Every stroke counted on this particular day, and the Bobcats had one fewer than the Little Cyclones.
Behind Lohman’s 38, Ames got a 43 from Zoey Johnson, a 47 from Lauren Van Hauen and a 52 by Addison Downs. Both Lohman and Johnson eagled the par-5 third hole, while Hilderbrand and Wilson both birdied.
Marshalltown resumes play on Friday at the 15-team Southeast Polk Invitational at Copper Creek Golf Club.
