Bobcats haunt Tigers, 1-0
Marshalltown girls soccer wins regular-season finale at home against Grinnell
There wasn’t much sunlight shining down on Leonard Cole Field, but Grinnell sophomore Katelyn Sieck had a shadow everywhere she went.
Or two.
Grinnell’s leading goal scorer by a long shot couldn’t get a shot into the net and the Marshalltown girls’ soccer squad closed the regular season with its first win in four games with a 1-0 triumph over the Tigers on Monday night.
Moved up to a 5 p.m. varsity-only contest due to impending weather, the Bobcats and Tigers played to a scoreless draw in the first half before Marshalltown (8-7-1) finally broke through after intermission.
Try as it might, Grinnell (4-10-1) never found an answer because the Bobcats weren’t about to let Sieck score.
Everywhere she went, so did Jorja Janssen and Fatima Ramirez Rosas.
“We definitely owned that field, controlling No. 16 was the ultimate goal of the day,” MHS head coach Kameron Nehring said of Sieck. “We kind of upset her and it was kind of perfect because that’s what the goal was at the end of the day.
“She’s very valuable to their team.”
Sieck entered Monday’s non-conference match with 12 of the Tigers’ 18 goals this season, 79 of their 135 shot attempts, and 52 of their 83 shots on goal.
Marshalltown’s own offensive stalwart — sophomore forward Claire Bonzer — got the goal Grinnell couldn’t. Early in the second half, MHS freshman defender Giahna Gomez reversed a Tiger throw-in back into the offensive zone, and Grinnell tried to clear it out.
Bobcat senior forward Lilyia Christen played through the ball and the Tiger defender’s clearing attempt deflected out in front of Bonzer, who chased down the accidentally perfect pass and put it into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Grinnell sophomore goalkeeper Maryn Sherman got caught too close to her line and had no defense against the third-leading goal-scorer in Class 3A.
Bonzer’s 22nd goal of the season arrived in the 45th minute and was the only mark against Sherman, who finished with eight saves. Marshalltown junior goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez finished with eight saves, too, in recording the team’s fourth clean sheet of the season.
“I think everyone did everything right tonight,” Nehring said. “We were communicating. I didn’t have to pull someone off and tell them to ‘fix this’ or ‘do this.’ Everyone just did it. Everyone talked, everyone communicated. Everyone moved if they needed to move.
“It was overall just a great atmosphere.”
Grinnell was held without a goal for the first time in five matches, while Marshalltown ended a three-match winless streak (0-2-1). Sieck had 10 shots, seven of them on goal, but came up empty in the end.
The Bobcats open 3A Region 6 play on Thursday, May 28, at Des Moines North. The Polar Bears beat the Bobcats 2-1 two weeks ago in Des Moines.
“I think we’re where we want to be — we’re positive, we’re energetic,” said Nehring. “It took us a little bit to get going at first tonight, but I think that’s almost what we needed. We adjusted to where we wanted to play against the wind, but I think we came out in the second half like ‘this is our field, no one’s going to take it away from us.'”
