’Cats chased off by Tigers

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team was unable to join its top doubles team in state qualification, falling in the first round of substate play on Wednesday morning.

The Bobcats were eliminated by Class 2A No. 10 Cedar Falls, 5-0, in Substate 2 play at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School.

The Tigers (10-7) went on to get eliminated by No. 7 Waukee, 5-2, to advance to the state tournament.

Marshalltown’s dual season ended at 10-6 after three doubles losses to Cedar Falls and two quick singles defeats.

The Bobcats’ most contested defeat came at No. 3 doubles, where Jacob Seberger and Parker Christen fell 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, (10-8) to Andre Fontana and Caleb Rumsey.

Caleb Rasmussen and Kyle Smith dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 1 doubles to Ben Smalley and Jake Hardman, while Elliot Kodis and Evan Roush fell 6-2, 6-2 to Luke Berger and Jordan Wyckoff at No. 2.

Rasmussen was ousted by Smalley, 6-1, 6-0, and Christen fell to Ernie Plunkett, 6-0, 6-0, to end the match early in the best-of-nine format.

Rasmussen and Roush will play in the 2A state doubles tournament on May 27-28 in Iowa City.
