DES MOINES — Three years after winning the inaugural Iowa Alliance Conference North Division crown, the Marshalltown girls’ golf team has claimed the throne over the entire league.

Three Bobcat golfers finished in the top seven and Marshalltown earned the Alliance title, winning Tuesday’s eight-team tournament at Bright Grandview Golf Course by 12 strokes.

MHS finished in with a 358 total, comfortably ahead of Ames (370) and well ahead of the rest of the field. Ottumwa (396) was a distant third and the only other team under 400.

This marked the third year in a row that all of the Iowa Alliance Conference teams came together for the season-ending league meet after having contested for divisional titles in the inaugural year of the IAC in 2023.

MHS finished second to Ames each of the last two years, but not this spring.

Bobcat sophomore Morgan Hilderbrand had an eagle during her day on the way to a 10-over-par round of 81, good for runner-up medalist behind Des Moines East’s Saleah Vivanh Vong’s 76.

Hilderbrand was 1-under through six holes and shot a 39 over the front nine.

MHS senior Harper Wilson had a birdie during her round of 87 — good for fourth place — and junior Hanna Osgood came away with a career-best 90 that earned her seventh.

“Morgan Hilderbrand got off to an electric start and had it under par through her first six holes after draining an eagle putt on No. 6,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “She was paired with one of the best players in the state in Vivanh Vong and did a great job hanging tough with her.

“It was great to see both Morgan and Harper have strong bounce-back rounds a day after the Waukee Invite, where we didn’t have our best stuff. Both are highly deserving of their first-team all-conference status not only based on what they did during the round, but their seasons as a whole.”

Hilderbrand and Wilson earned first-team all-conference honors, while Osgood got second-team.

“Hanna Osgood might be the story of the day in that she’d never broken 100 before in her career and she goes out and almost breaks 90,” Johnson said. “She had great control of her driver and was putting herself in excellent scoring position off the tee.”

Fellow junior Emma Clawson closed out the Bobcats’ team scoring with her 100, while freshman Avery Polley’s 102 earned 20th place and would have been good enough to get MHS to the top of the team standings as well. Sophomore Kamryn Price finished with a 115.

Marshalltown will have the home-course advantage when it tries to qualify for the state tournament, as the Bobcats host their Class 4A Region 3 meet on Wednesday, May 20, at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.

“We know we still have plenty to work on and we’re looking forward to getting in some quality practice sessions prior to regionals on Wednesday,” Johnson added.
