Comet girls collect another state golf berth

NEW SHARON — The BCLUW girls’ golf team is going back to Boone.

The Comets shot a 376 team score to advance to state as the runner-up at Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 3 final at Prairie Knolls Country Club, holding off a cast of contenders for the final qualifying spot.

Mount Ayr won the team title with a 371, the Comets were second, while BGM (378), Martensdale-St. Marys (380) and host North Mahaska (381) were all within five shots of BCLUW.

The Comets, having missed out on state last season, will be advancing to the spring finale for the fourth time in the last five years.

Jaya Beeghly led the team on Wednesday, finishing in with an 88 to claim fourth place overall. Leah McEwen carded a 91 for ninth place, and Gracie Andrews finished 15th with a 96. Ainsley Geelhart contributed the final counting score for the Comets with a 101.

Parker Bergman (126) and Olivia Ralston (129) also competed for BCLUW.

Mount Ayr’s Jaylee Schaffer won medalist honors by a whopping 14 strokes after shooting a 2-under-par 70 to lead the field of 52 golfers. She had three birdies and an eagle during her run to the regional title.

The 1A state tournament is May 28-29 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone, where the Comets collected fourth place in 2023.
