Comets can’t keep pace in Class 1A race
BOONE — The BCLUW girls’ golf team closed out its fourth trip to the season-ending Class 1A state tournament in the last five years with an eighth-place finish on Friday at Cedar Point Golf Course.
The Comets couldn’t move the needle in the needed direction in Friday’s final 18 holes and slipped from fifth to eighth in the 10-team final standings. BCLUW shot 367-380–747 to come in ahead of Earlham (760) and Mount Ayr (766).
Easton Valley lost most of its 14-stroke lead between the first and second rounds but held on for the 1A team title, 701-703, ahead of Highland. South Winneshiek was third at 718.
Gracie Andrews carded an eight-stroke improvement on the second day to captain the Comets at state this season, tying for 23rd place with a 93-85–178. Jaya Beeghly tied for 28th with an 87-94–181, while Leah McEwen tied for 42nd at 91-99–190. Ainsley Geelhart (96-102–198) accounted for BCLUW’s final scoring round.
Parker Bergman (121-129–250) and Olivia Rolston (126-124–250) both finished with the same score.
Andrews, McEwen, Geelhart and Rolston all closed their Comet golf careers as seniors in the lineup.
