Comets claim first-round 1A regional

JEWELL — The BCLUW girls’ golf team claimed the championship at its Class 1A Region 3B meet on Friday at Jewell Golf & Country Club, leading the rest of the field to the finish line by a whopping 22 strokes.

The Comets finished in with a season-best 381 team total, holding off host South Hamilton (403) as well as Panorama (433) — both of which advanced. The three teams will play in the 1A Region 3 final on Wednesday, May 20, at Prairie Knolls Country Club in New Sharon in hopes of qualifying for state.

BCLUW was led by meet medalist Gracie Andrews, who shot a personal-record round of 91 to take the top spot of the 34-player field. Leah McEwen shot a 94 to finish in fourth place and Jaya Beeghly tied for fifth with a 96.

Ainsley Geelhart finished with a 100 to complete the Comets’ team scoring. Parker Bergman (123) and Olivia Ralston (126) also competed for BCLUW.

No go for Mustangs, GMG

BROOKLYN — The East Marshall and GMG girls’ golf programs were unable to advance through their Class 1A Region 3C meet on Friday at Brooklyn-Victor Country Club.

East Marshall finished sixth with a 429 team total and GMG was last out of nine teams with a 525. Meet host BGM won the team title with a 356 and will be joined in the Region 3 meet at New Sharon on Wednesday by North Mahaska (369) and Sigourney (389).

East Marshall was led by Mya Gould, who shot a 103. Kate Johnson carded a 105 and Tori Mauseth finished in with a 106. Abigail Hendricks posted the final counting score for the Mustangs with a 115. Hayliee VerSteegh (116) and Charlee Gallentine (124) also competed for the Mustangs.

GMG was led by Piper Jones with a 119, followed by additional scoring rounds from Kenzie Bartel (133), Brooklyn Ridout (133) and Ryann Bessman (140). Delaney McCubbin (145) and Regann Bessman (146) also played for the Wolverines.

One stroke denies Randall

STORY CITY — West Marshall senior Riley Randall narrowly missed out on advancing to the Class 2A Region 3 finals after Friday’s first-round meet hosted by Roland-Story at River Bend Golf Course.

Randall shot a 91, missing out on the sixth and final individual qualifier spot by one stroke. Roland-Story, which won the team title, also took three of the six spots for individual qualifiers.

West Marshall shot a 414 team total to finish fifth out of eight squads in attendance. The host Norsemen advanced with a 343 and will be joined by Grundy Center (359) and PCM (393).

Rachel Randall came away with 15th place after shooting 100, while Reese Buschbom (111) and Sienna Edler (112) also contributed to the final team score. Olivia Pfantz (123) and Claire Kouba (130) played for the Trojans as well.

West Marshall is the host of the Region 3 finale on Wednesday, May 20, at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
