BOONE — The BCLUW girls’ golf team stands in fifth place out of 10 teams in the Class 1A Iowa Girls’ State Golf Tournament after Thursday’s opening round at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.

The Comets shot a 367 team total after the first 18 holes, just two shots shy of South Winneshiek in fourth place (365). Easton Valley leads the team standings at 344, followed by Highland (356) and Bishop Garrigan (357).

Jaya Beeghly leads the BCLUW contingent after the first day, shooting a 15-over-par 87 to tie for 15th place. Leah McEwen contributed a 91 to the team total, Gracie Andrews shot 93, and Ainsley Geelhart completed the Comets’ scoring with her 96.

Parker Bergman (121) and Olivia Rolston (126) also competed for BCLUW.

Jaylee Shaffer of Mount Ayr leads the 81-player field after shooting a 2-under 70 on the opening day.

Friday’s final 18 holes starts with tee times at 8:30 a.m. back in Boone.
