Dowling comeback stuns Bobcat boys
WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team was bounced from the Class 4A Substate 7 semifinals in heartbreaking fashion, falling 5-4 in overtime to Dowling Catholic on Wednesday night.
The Bobcats (11-6-1) led 4-2 in the second half before Dowling (5-7-5) rallied to score twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation to force overtime. The Maroons missed out on a golden opportunity to get the game-winner when Jonathan Nunez saved Landon Sullivan’s penalty kick just 44 seconds into the extra period, but Marshalltown’s second own-goal off a Dowling corner kick sealed the Bobcats’ fate three minutes later.
Sullivan scored two goals during regulation, including the tying tally with just 40 seconds left after a Bobcat foul and yellow card was issued just beyond the penalty area. Sullivan capitalized to keep the Maroons alive, and they carried the momentum into overtime.
Dowling led 2-0 before Marshalltown got on the board with an Andres Ordaz goal with 19:34 left in the first half. Gavin Misek muscled his way through the Dowling defense on an assist from Angel Gomez with 9:30, sending the match into a 2-all tie.
Gomez got a goal of his own three minutes into the second half on an assist from Aaron Ordaz Zambrano, who in turn scored on a perfect through-ball from Ordaz for a 4-2 MHS advantage with 30:03 to play.
Dowling Catholic had eight corner kicks to Marshalltown’s none, two of which led to own-goals.
