Hawkeye women add Medina and Stromdahl

IOWA CITY — The second-leading scorer in NCAA Division III is headed to the Hawkeyes.

Knox College junior Bria Medina has found her landing spot out of the transfer portal, picking the University of Iowa for her final season of eligibility.

Medina’s signing was announced Thursday in conjunction with incoming freshman recruit Ella Stromdahl from Uppsala, Sweden.

A 5-foot-6 guard, Medina averaged 23.6 points per game this past season at Knox to lead the Midwest Conference. She was fourth in the conference at 4.0 assists per game, second in steals (2.7) and 17th in rebounding (5.3).

Medina scored at least 20 points in all but three games for the Prairie Fire, who went 13-13 overall and 11-5 in their league. She led all of Division III in free throws while shooting 86.9 percent from the charity stripe (199-for-229).

The Tucson, Ariz., native scored 1,524 points over her three-year career at Knox, averaging 19.5 points per game while starting all 78 games. Medina made just 30 3-pointers in her three seasons in Galesburg, Ill.

“We are so excited to add Bria to our program,” Iowa head coach Jan Jensen said. “Her energy and gratitude to be a part of our family is the coolest part about her. She had a great deal of scoring success at Knox College and has an immense amount of appreciation for our sport. Her mindset and work ethic is what set her apart for us as we went through the process.”

Medina was a three-time Midwest Conference first-team honoree and the league’s Newcomer of the Year in 2023-24.

Stromdahl will be the first Swedish player in program history. The 6-foot wing played last winter on the RIG Lulea Swedish academy team and averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Stromdahl has competed on Sweden’s U16 and U18 national teams during her prep career.

“Ella is a versatile wing that we are really excited about joining our team,” Jensen said. “We like her ability to put it on the floor and to shoot it. Ella has a ton of potential, and we are thrilled to have her in Iowa City.”

Stromdahl is only the second player in Iowa’s freshman recruiting class, joining five-star prospect McKenna Woliczko.

Starting at $4.38/week.
