Holmgren’s shutout sparks Bobcats’ sweep of North
DES MOINES — Sophomore Aiden Holmgren struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout in the first game and freshman Madden Martin had four hits in the second game as the Marshalltown baseball team swept Des Moines North — 6-0 and 11-4 — on Wednesday.
Holmgren walked only one and hit a batter but surrendered just five singles in the complete-game performance to help deliver the Bobcats’ first win. Kinnick Niedermann had two hits, drove in a run and scored as Marshalltown (2-1) tallied at least one run in each of its first four at-bats.
Jalen Logsdon hit a two-run double, walked and scored, while Holmgren and Martin added singles in the opener. North pitching walked five and hit three batters to fuel Marshalltown’s fast start.
In the nightcap, Martin went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Holmgren and fellow sophomore Garrett Thede added two hits apiece. Holmgren scored three runs while Thede scored once and drove in a pair. Luke Stalzer added a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, and Larrs Schoenfelder singled in the win.
Martin pitched two hitless innings for the win, striking out five, while Stalzer and Schoenfelder combined on the final five frames in relief. Schoenfelder struck out three and allowed only one hit and one walk in 3 1/3 innings to close out the sweep.
“Compared to Monday night, we threw more strikes and handled the bat better,” said MHS head coach Colton Hanke. “Holmgren did a good job on the mound for Game 1 to get the shutout. In Game 2, guys executed plays and Larrs did a nice job coming in relief to close out the game.”
Marshalltown hosts North Tama for a JV/varsity doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. on Friday night at the MHS diamond.
