COLFAX — The East Marshall boys’ and girls’ track and field teams emerged from Thursday’s Class 1A state-qualifying meet with three automatic berths and eventually added nine more entrants on at-large times and distances.

The Mustang boys came away with third place in the final team standings at Thursday’s event at Colfax-Mingo High School, scoring 91 points to trail only Madrid (116) and Baxter (111) in the 13-team meet.

Only meet champions earned automatic entry into the upcoming state meet, and East Marshall had three of them. Natahn Frye won the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 1 inch, while the Mustangs also claimed the sprint medley and 4×400-meter relays.

East Marshall’s sprint medley team of Blake Neuroth, Kaden Good, Eli Burns and Cael Curphy clocked in a season-best 1 minute, 36.53 seconds to win the meet, and the quartet of Neuroth, Kaden Grant, Burns and Curphy won the 4×400 in a season-low time of 3:28.81.

Friday’s release of at-large qualifiers included four more Mustang entrants for state — all individuals. Burns advanced in both the 110 hurdles (15.34) and the long jump (20-8 3/4); Curphy in the 400 (season-best 51.40); and Neuroth in the 400 hurdles (season-best 56.33). All four of those qualifiers had placed second in the state-qualifying meet.

The East Marshall girls got five entrants through to state — all on at-large qualifying. Sydney Hull made it back to state in the 800 and 1,500 after season-best times of 2:24.88 and 5:06.72, respectively.

Ashtyn Wheater placed second in the state-qualifying meet but will be seeded sixth in the shot put at state with her toss of 37-6 1/2. Marisa Cahalan also was the high jump runner-up and will be seeded seventh after clearing a season-best height of 5-2.

The Mustangs’ distance medley team of Gianna Boswell, Libby Atcher, Addy Denham and Hull had a two-second season-best in finishing third and qualifying for state in 4:30.48.

Field, no track, for GMG and BCLUW teams

BELLE PLAINE — The GMG and BCLUW track and field teams combined for four state qualifiers — all in field events — after Thursday’s state-qualifying meet at Belle Plaine High School.

GMG pushed through a pair of throwers based on at-large qualifying for the Class 1A state meet. Wolverine senior Jay Bessman finished second in Belle Plaine with a discus heave of 141 feet, 4 inches, and is seeded 20th for state. Sophomore Arianna Pierce placed third on Thursday but is seeded 15th in the shot put with a toss of 35-8.

BCLUW senior Grace Farnsworth finished second in the shot put with an effort of 36-7 1/2 and will be seeded 10th at state. Belle Plaine’s Reghan DeRycke won the state-qualifying meet at 36-10 1/2.

Comet sophomore Cambria Wayman advanced in the long jump as well. She finished fifth in Belle Plaine and was an at-large qualifier with her leap of 16-3/4.

Trojans total seven entries

STORY CITY — The West Marshall track and field teams totaled seven entrants for the upcoming state meet after Thursday’s state-qualifying meet at Roland-Story High School.

The Trojans emerged with three automatic qualifiers thanks to top-two finishes at the 12-team Class 2A meet. Sophomore Dalaney Eldridge was the team’s only meet champion, winning the long jump with a season-best leap of 16 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Eldridge was a part of three of the Trojan girls’ four qualifiers, as she is headed to Des Moines in the 400-meter dash and also as a part of the 4×800-meter relay. Eldridge finished third in the 400 in 1 minute, 2.17 seconds, and was one of eight at-large qualifiers in 2A. The 4×800 foursome of Ella Randall, Addie Thompson, Zoey Wignall and Eldridge turned in a season-best 10:24.46 to finish fifth but advance on time.

Thompson turned in an 11:14.29 to finish third in the 3,000 and qualify for state again as well.

On the boys’ side, both Evan Siegert and Ryder Gile qualified automatically as runners-up at Roland-Story. Siegert clocked a season-best 51.89 in the 400 to score silver, while Gile cleared 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump to advance as the runner-up.

Kinnick Geers came in fourth in the 100 but advanced with his time of 11.43. He’ll have the highest seed at state among the three Trojan boys, sitting 19th in 2A.
