Mustangs march on

East Marshall, BCLUW and West Marshall all advance to districts

WYOMING — East Marshall senior Cody Weaver claimed medalist honors by a whopping nine strokes and the Mustangs advanced to districts with the sectional title on Wednesday at the Class 1A meet at Little Bear Country Club.

Weaver shot a 1-under-par round of 71 to lead the field to the finish line. The Mustangs shot a 325 team total to claim the sectional crown by 13 strokes ahead of the nearest competitors. Marquette Catholic of Bellevue was second with a 338 and Easton Valley also advanced with a 351 — one stroke ahead of host Midland (352) for the third and final spot.

Weaver’s medalist round included four birdies as he topped the 45-player tournament.

Fellow East Marshall senior Jackson Bidwell finished in with an 84 to take sixth place, Rylan Weaver was eighth with the same score, and Austin Crandon carded an 86 to round out the team scoring. Jaxson Boswell (90) and Wyatt Stalzer (92) also competed for the Mustangs.

East Marshall advances to play in the 1A district meet at Oskaloosa Public Golf on Monday, May 18. The top three teams from that meet qualify for state.

Comets claim second on home course

CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ golf team used its home-course advantage to advance through the first round of postseason play, scoring second place at Wednesday’s Class 1A sectional meet at Oakwood Golf Course.

The Comets shot a 320 to trail only Gladbrook-Reinbeck (306) in the seven-team tournament, finishing well inside the top three. AGWSR (323) claimed the final advancing spot ahead of Fort Dodge St. Edmond (331) and North Tama (336).

GMG shot a 413 for sixth place, finishing ahead of Colo-NESCO (433).

BCLUW was led by Zaden Eggers, who shot an 8-over-par 78 to take sixth place. Adam Frank finished in with a 79 for eighth, Nate Bishop shot an 80, and Beau Towne tallied an 83 to round out the Comets’ scoring. Eathan Petermeier and Aiden Frank both finished with an 89.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck recorded five of the day’s best seven scores to advance as the sectional champion, led by medalist Chad Gutknecht’s 74.

Easton Runner shot a 90 to lead GMG in its season finale. Domanic Harding had a 104, Jayden Beichley carded a 106, and Brayton Davis rounded out the Wolverines’ scoring with a 113.

Polley powers Trojans to third-place finish

GRUNDY CENTER — Defending Class 2A state champion Hunter Polley shot a 3-over-par 75 to take medalist honors at Wednesday’s sectional meet at Town & Country Golf Club.

Polley’s first-place finish helped the Trojans advance as a team, too, with a 366 team score. Host Grundy Center (324) and Hudson (359) also advanced out of Wednesday’s seven-team tournament.

West Marshall junior James Decker finished 10th with a round of 89 to help the Trojans, who will compete in the 2A district at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo on Monday, May 18.
