Saved by the bell
Bobcats beat Polar Bears in two-day regional showdown
DES MOINES — Jorja Janssen saw all she needed to, both on Thursday night and again Friday.
Junior goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez made her last two of 38 saves during a shootout and the Marshalltown girls’ soccer team advanced past Des Moines North with a 4-3 victory on Thursday and Friday at Grubb Community Stadium.
The two teams played to a 3-all tie on Thursday night before the stadium’s lighting issue forced school officials to postpone the remainder of the Class 3A Region 6 first-round match to Friday.
Janssen, Marshalltown’s senior defender, missed out on Thursday’s action because of an academic awards ceremony at the high school — but was watching on her phone.
Standing as the fifth and final Bobcat shooter near the center circle on Friday, Janssen knew she might not get the chance to score during penalty kicks.
“To be honest, I was not that nervous because I knew these girls had it,” Janssen said. “I just trusted that they were going to get it done, and then if I needed to do it, I was prepared to do it.
“Sophie is amazing and I trusted her fully. I think obviously it’s a lot of pressure on her, so it was a little scary, but she did amazing.”
Des Moines North (6-8-1), which beat the Bobcats 2-1 during the regular season, even took the lead during the best-of-five shootout. Brisa Medina-Vega made a diving save on Marshalltown’s opening penalty kick attempt by Alina Garcia, and Marely Martinez Sanchez snuck one by Valdez Chavez to put the Polar Bears in front, 1-0.
It was all Marshalltown (9-7-1) from there.
Katie Gomez Reyes scored, North’s Ana Marie Martinez missed the frame, and Gennese Tellez tallied into the upper 90 to make it 2-1 Bobcats. Elena Gaya’s ensuing shot was saved by Valdez Chavez, and Claire Bonzer put Marshalltown on the brink of victory when her shot glanced off Medina-Vega’s outstretched gloves for a 3-1 advantage.
Felicite Walongo Myangitu’s shot seemed on its way into the net to keep the Polar Bears alive, but Valdez Chavez made a diving stop to end the match.
The celebration was muted, however, when the assistant referee told Valdez Chavez there was one more round to go. The head referee’s whistle told her otherwise.
“I was going to walk back over until the center ref called game,” she said, “that’s when I realized the game was over.
“I was for sure relieved. I think beforehand there were tears already falling, so I was just really glad that I get to play at least one more game with our seniors and with this team.”
The reward for the Bobcats’ persistence is a regional semifinal at No. 6 Ankeny (9-5-1) on Tuesday night.
“Sophie worked her butt off yesterday,” said MHS head coach Kameron Nehring. “She saved us from a lot of their opportunities. PKs are a lot different, but she has confidence in herself.”
Marshalltown led every step of Thursday’s regulation match, but Des Moines North had the equalizer each time. Bonzer put the Bobcats in front 1-0 with her goal two seconds before halftime, and North answered seven minutes into the second half on a goal for Hailee McCarl.
Itzabella Meraz made it 2-1 Marshalltown just three minutes later, assisted by Bonzer, but North responded again. Vick Lumanya collected a loose ball behind Valdez Chavez for the tying tally, 2-2, in the 55th minute.
Bonzer again made good on a scoring opportunity on an assist from Keira Halsted, making it 3-2 with 18 minutes left in regulation. The Polar Bears drew even in the 72nd minute on a goal by Natalia Sandoval.
Referees and school officials then decided, with one end of the field without working lights, to push the outcome of the contest back a day.
Marshalltown returned and got the revenge it was looking for.
“I was really happy because I felt bad not being able to go yesterday,” said Janssen. “I was really glad that I got a chance to play just in case it could have been our last match, but thankfully we’ve get one more.”
The Bobcats had the best scoring chances of the two 10-minute overtime periods but couldn’t push the ball into the next. Consecutive corner kicks late in the first half came up empty, and Marshalltown’s back line held firm against a fast set of forwards for North, forcing multiple offside calls.
In the shootout, Nehring called on her coolest customers to take the team to the next round.
“It was nerve-wracking because we only practiced them once,” she said, “so I kind of went off of that and was like ‘who’s gonna be my most calm, cool and collected? I didn’t really look for girls who were going to put it in the back of the net, but who’s gonna be able to keep their composure — walk out there, make or miss, come back and be a solid teammate and go help out.”
Lumanya, North’s leading goal scorer, never got to shoot during PKs because Valdez Chavez and the Bobcats didn’t let it get that far.
“Walking into the goal, it felt scary for sure,” Valdez Chavez said. “It was emotional because it’s life or death at that point, it was me versus one. So it was scary, but I felt confident for sure. And after all the saves from yesterday, I’m like ‘I think I got this.’
“I just wanted to keep my head clean and straight.”
Her teammates did the same.
“I knew that she could do it because she’s a really talented goalie,” Bonzer said of Valdez Chavez. “We all just counted on her to make that save and she did. Also I was scared for her, obviously, because that’s a very stressful position to be in.”
