SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys bring home some bronze medals
WAUKEE — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team totaled 25 points to finish eighth out of nine scoring teams at the Waukee Northwest Relays on Thursday night.
The Bobcats bagged a pair of bronze-medal performances to lead the way. Carter Nunn clocked the 35th fastest 1,600-meter time in the state this season, finishing in 4 minutes, 25.22 seconds for third place.
The Bobcats’ distance medley relay team also posted a third-place finish. Jamison Niehouse, Zane Moore, Larrs Schoenfelder and Carson Wright combined on a time of 4:01.73, edging out Ames (4:01.75) at the finish line.
Marshalltown’s 4×800-meter relay foursome of Kade Randall, Myles Goldman, Michael Downs and Thomas Stanley took fifth place in 8:56.50, while the 4×200 quartet of Declan Greene, Aiden Smitherman, Evan Anderson and Niehouse tallied a season-best time of 1:35.22 to place sixth.
Anderson added a seventh-place finish in the 200 with a season-low 22.63, while the 4×400 relay team of Zak Wilder, Wright, Randall and Greene placed seventh in 3:49.02. The sprint medley group of Jayden Lavender, Moore, Wilder and Nunn placed eighth in 1:43.76.
Comets, Wolverines compete at Spartan Relays
MAXWELL — The BCLUW girls’ track and field teams both finished second and GMG was fourth out of as many teams at Collins-Maxwell’s Spartan Relays on Thursday night.
On the girls’ side, Collins-Maxwell won its own meet with 203 points, followed by BCLUW (142), AGWSR (111) and GMG (56).
The Comet girls got three first-place finishes with Grace Farnsworth scoring two of them. Farnsworth won the discus with a toss of 97 feet, 3 inches, and took first in the shot put (36-11) as well.
Brinna Benson scored gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.66 seconds, while Elise Engle was second in the 200 (29.79). Chloe Switzer was runner-up in the 1,500 (5:44.05) and the high jump (4-6), and Cambria Wayman came in second in the long jump (14-9 3/4).
Comet relays collected second place in the sprint medley, 4×100, 4×200 and 4×800.
The GMG girls had a pair of silver-medal finishes. Skyler Murty took second in the shot put (34-10 1/2) and third in the discus (90-9), while Addison Elmore was second in the discus (91-11). Arianna Pierce picked up third in the shot put (34-4).
On the track, GMG got third in the 4×200 as Pierce, Riah, Murty and Joleesa Vazquez came in third (2:09.57).
Three of the BCLUW boys’ wins came in relays, while Daniel Zoske claimed the top spot in the discus (143-6) and second in the shot put (44-8).
The Comet quartet of Eathan Petermeier, Vance Hoyt, Brayden Catherwood and Tommy Hinderhofer won the distance medley in 3:59.67; the 4×200 team of Owen Case, Avery Schipper, BJ Boaz and Hoyt won the 4×200 in 1:41.65; and the 4×100 foursome of Boaz, Hoyt, Case and Petermeier picked up gold in the 4×100 (46.94).
The GMG boys topped out with third-place finishes from Jacoby Woodbury in the 400 (57.50), Jay Bessman in the shot put (41 feet), and the sprint medley team of Dustin Miller, Jacob Snider, Landon Balmer and Rider Kupka (1:47.64).
Iowa to host Legacy Youth Camps at Kinnick Stadium
IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa Hawkeye Legacy program will host two free youth football camps on Saturday, June 6. Each of the two camps will be held inside Kinnick Stadium. The camps will be led by current Iowa football student-athletes and Iowa football alumni.
A camp for boys and girls entering grades 1-4 will take place from 9:30-10:45 a.m. A camp for boys and girls entering grades 5-8 will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Each camp is limited to the first 125 kids registered. Check-in time for grades 1-4 will begin at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. for grades 5-8.
Registration for both camps must be done in advance and online. Registrations will be accepted online beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 1, at iowasportscamps.com. All campers must register online in advance of June 6. Walk-up registration will not be permitted.
Participants in each of the two camps will be divided by age group, with the focus on the camps being on football fundamental activities.
Parents/guardians will be able to watch the camps from the west stands of the stadium but will not have field access. Free parking will be available in Lot 43, adjacent to the west side of Kinnick Stadium.
