SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats sixth at competition-rich SEP Invite
PLEASANT HILL — Harper Wilson brought home some hardware in leading the Marshalltown girls’ golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Southeast Polk Invitational on Thursday at Copper Creek Golf Club.
Wilson earned a medal for her 12th-place finish, shooting a 12-over-par 83 to lead the Bobcats. MHS totaled 364 to finish behind host Southeast Polk (327), Gilbert (334), Waukee Northwest (336), Cedar Rapids Washington (338) and Norwalk (353) in the 15-team tournament.
Southeast Polk’s Anna Wahman won a cardback over Washington’s Lily Belle Barker for medalist honors after both golfers shot 72.
Bobcat sophomore Morgan Hilderbrand took 16th place for her round of 86, while Emma Clawson carded 94 and Hanna Osgood shot 101 to round out the team score. Avery Polley (107) and Kamryn Price (122) also competed for the ‘Cats, who resume play Monday at the Waukee Invite at Beaver Creek Golf Club.
Weaver first, Mustangs second in NICL boys golf
CEDAR FALLS — East Marshall senior Cody Weaver shot a 3-under-par round of 69 to claim medalist honors in leading the Mustangs to a runner-up finish at the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament on Thursday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.
Weaver’s round was highlighted by a 3-under 33 on the front nine that featured four birdies, and an even-par 36 on the back that included seven pars. He won the individual crown by three strokes ahead of Max Mudd of Waterloo Columbus as the Sailors scored the team title.
Columbus shot 303 to claim the top honors, followed by East Marshall’s 309, Aplington-Parkersburg at 314 and Grundy Center with 315 atop the 15-team meet.
Rylan Weaver shot a 78 to take 10th place overall for the Mustangs, followed by Wyatt Stalzer and Jackson Bidwell both at 81. Jaxson Boswell (87) and Austin Crandon (93) also played for East Marshall.
The Mustangs compete in the 1A sectional meet at Little Bear Country Club in Wyoming on Wednesday after a reclassification shifted East Marshall down from 2A. The sectional meet starts at 10 a.m.
Polley scores fourth place at Heart of Iowa tourney
STATE CENTER — West Marshall senior Hunter Polley picked up a fourth-place finish at the Heart of Iowa Conference boys’ golf tournament on Tuesday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course, leading the host Trojans to seventh place.
Polley, the reigning Class 2A state champion, shot a 3-over-par 75 to pace the Trojans. Grand View Christian’s Henry Lane and PCM’s Charlie Ford both shot 71 for the top two spots, and Nevada’s Parker Rodgers shot 72 for third.
Nevada won the team title with a 310 total, followed by PCM (315) and Roland-Story (316) in the nine-team tournament. West Marshall was seventh with a 338, just three strokes back of South Hamilton (335) in sixth.
West Marshall’s team score included an 84 from James Decker, a 91 from Carter Pfantz and a 97 from Connor Kemmerer. Tanner Smith (98) and Blayk Hart (99) also competed for the Trojans.
Central Iowa United boys break even with Creston
STATE CENTER — Andrew Seyller scored two goals and had an assist to help the Central Iowa United boys’ soccer team square away a 4-4 tie with Creston on Monday night.
Aidyn Short and Jack Seyller both scored goals while Gage Byal, Tanner Heaps and Ezra Muntz added assists for United (1-10-1), which outshot the Panthers 16-12.
Joaquin Flores had three goals and an assist for Creston (4-5-1), and CT Stalker added a goal in the draw.
Landon Vaughn made nine saves in net for Central Iowa United.
Bobcat boys batter Fort Dodge in Alliance play
FORT DODGE — Andres Ordaz, Gavin Misek and Jovani Mendoza scored two goals apiece to lead the Marshalltown boys’ soccer team to an 8-2 trouncing of Fort Dodge in last Friday’s Iowa Alliance Conference North Division match.
Aaron Ordaz Zambrano had a goal and two assists, Armando Estrada scored and Angel Chavez Ordaz added an assist for the Bobcats (9-4-1, 3-1-0). Jonathan Nunez made seven saves in net for MHS, which outshot the Dodgers 33-8.
Madden Bailey scored both goals for Fort Dodge (2-8-0, 1-3-0), and Ayden Hernandez had an assist. Alex Berger made 16 saves as the Dodgers suffered their fifth consecutive loss.
The match kicked off a four-game road swing for Marshalltown to close out the regular season.
