SPORTS SHORTS: Comets, Wolverines compete at Grundy Center meet
GRUNDY CENTER — The BCLUW and GMG girls’ and boys’ track teams both competed in Grundy Center’s Harry Dole Classic Co-Ed meet on Friday inside Spartan Stadium.
In the girls’ meet, BCLUW scored 31 points for ninth place and GMG got 24 points for 10th. Grundy Center won with 147 points, followed by Waverly-Shell Rock (129) and Dike-New Hartford (78).
The top local finish came from GMG’s throwers as Arianna Pierce and Skyler Murty went 1-2 in the shot put and BCLUW’s Grace Farnsworth finished third. Pierce threw 36 feet, 4 1/2 inches to lead the field, Murty got 35-7 and Farnsworth cleared 35-3.
Farnsworth took fourth in the discus with a toss of 100 feet, Murty was sixth (97-4), and GMG’s Addison Elmore was seventh (97 feet).
BCLUW also got fourth-place finishes from Cambria Wayman in the 100-meter dash (13.79 seconds) and the distance medley relay team of Brinna Benson, Layla Follett, Wayman and Chloe Switzer (4:55.40). The 4×100 foursome of Wayman, Lucy Walters, Layla Follett and Benson was fifth in 55.70, while Switzer scored sixth in the 1,500 (5:43.75).
On the boys’ side, BCLUW scored 31.5 points for eighth place and GMG was ninth with 14. Waverly-Shell Rock claimed the team title with 164.5 points, followed by Grundy Center (121.5) and Oelwein (106).
BCLUW’s Daniel Zoske took top honors for the area, claiming second in the shot put (47-3/4) and third in the discus (137-8). GMG’s Jay Bessman was fourth in the discus (135-8) and sixth in the shot put (42-7), while BCLUW’s Damian Halladay was seventh in the shot (40-9 1/2).
BCLUW’s Brayden Catherwood collected fourth place in the 800 with his season-best time of 2:14.98, while Tommy Hinderhofer narrowly missed his season-best clocking in taking fifth in the 400 (55.26).
The Comets also collected seventh in the sprint medley (Eathan Petermeier, Vance Hoyt, Avery Schipper, Hinderhofer; 1:45.73) and eighth in the 4×200 (Schipper, Petermeier, BJ Boaz, Hoyt; 1:40.90).
GMG’s Rider Kupka placed seventh in the 200 (25.23). The relay team of Dustin Miller, Landon Balmer, Kupka and Jacoby Woodbury took eighth in both the sprint medley (1:47.17) and the distance medley (4:15.43).
Comet boys clip Don Bosco in Iowa Star triangular
CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ golf team scored a season-low total to deny Don Bosco by one stroke in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference triangular at Oakwood Golf Course.
The Comets took the win 155-156 ahead of the Dons, while Clarksville was third in the meet with a 179.
BCLUW’s team total was just 15 strokes over par, captained on this day by Adam Frank’s 2-over 37 to earn medalist honors.
Zaden Eggers and Beau Towne both shot 39 and Aiden Frank finished out with a 40 to complete the Comets’ team scoring. Nate Bishop shot 41 and Carter McCready carded a 42 as well for BCLUW.
Don Bosco was led by Tucker Youngblut and Cam Schmit, who both shot 38. Gavin Jacobs paced Clarksville with a 42.
