First-half advantage holds up for MHS boys soccer

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team scored three first-half goals and held off Des Moines East for a 3-2 victory on Friday night at Williams Stadium.

Angel Gomez scored twice and Aaron Ordaz Zambrano got a goal to help the Bobcats (10-4-1) storm to the decisive first-half advantage. Andres Ordaz registered two assists to help MHS to the early lead.

Des Moines East (2-10-0) countered in the second half, getting a goal on a long shot from Tony Hall less than six minutes out of the intermission. The Scarlets cut the deficit to one with a little luck, as Joel Anaya-Rodriguez redirected a clearing attempt by MHS goalkeeper Jonathan Nunez that bounced directly into the net with 24 minutes left to play.

Nunez finished with four saves while Omar Torres was unchallenged in 21 minutes in a reserve role in net.

The Bobcats are back on the road Tuesday night with a trip to Ottumwa before closing the regular season Thursday at Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Starting at $4.38/week.
