SPORTS SHORTS: Polar Bears push past Bobcat girls, 2-1

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team surrendered two first-half tallies in a 2-1 loss at Des Moines North’s Grubb Stadium on Tuesday night.

Vick Lumanya scored both goals for North (4-4-1), beating the back line of the Bobcat defense and dribbling in uncontested against MHS goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez. Chavez got her gloves on the first Lumanya goal but got stranded in a 1-on-1 situation for the second goal.

Marshalltown outshot the Polar Bears 18-12, but only half of the Bobcats’ shots were on net. Brisa Medina-Vega made nine saves for North, which surrendered an own-goal for Marshalltown’s second-half tally.

Chavez finished with 13 saves for the Bobcats (7-6-0), who begin a three-game homestand to close the regular season with Friday’s 7 p.m. contest against Des Moines East.

Comet girls clobber competition in Comet Invite

UNION — The BCLUW girls’ golf team had four scores in the top seven en route to winning its Comet Invite on Monday at Union Hills Golf Course by a whopping 33 strokes.

The Comets came to the clubhouse with a 398 team total, finishing well ahead of runner-up South Hardin (431). East Marshall finished sixth with its 476.

Gracie Andrews and Leah McEwen both shot the low round of the day to lead the Comets, carding 96 to take medalist and runner-up honors, respectively. Ainsley Geelhart finished in with a 100, and Jaya Beeghly added a 106 to BCLUW’s triumphant total.

Mya Gould and Hayliee VerSteegh both shot 117 to lead East Marshall, followed by Kate Johnson’s 118 and a 124 by Abby Hendricks to round out the team score.

Weaver wins, Mustangs third at Sailor Invite

WATERLOO — Cody Weaver shot an even-par 70 to claim medalist honors and lead the East Marshall boys’ golf team to a third-place finish at the Sailor Invitational on Monday at Sunnyside Golf & Country Club.

Host Waterloo Columbus won the 12-team tournament with a 321 total, followed by Aplington-Parkersburg (328), East Marshall (332) and Grundy Center (340).

Weaver’s round of 70 was five strokes better than the nearest competitor as Grundy Center’s Judd Jirovsky scored second with a 75.

East Marshall’s Jackson Bidwell tied for 14th with an 84, Rylan Weaver shot 87 and Austin Crandon carded a 91 to round out the team scoring.

BCLUW boys use tight grouping to win own invite

CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ golf team held off a competitive field to win its own Comet Invite on Monday at Oakwood Golf Course by two strokes ahead of Roland-Story.

BCLUW finished in with a 315 team total, followed closely by Roland-Story (317), Hudson (319) and Union Community (320). East Marshall’s junior varsity scored seventh out of eight teams with a 350.

The Comets’ four counting scores were all within two strokes of each other, as Zaden Eggers (78), Beau Towne (78), Nate Bishop (79) and Adam Frank (80) finished in places 6-9 individually.

Christian Little and Hunter Elliot both shot 85 for East Marshall, Kael Koch added an 89 and Von Blackburn shot 91.

Hudson’s Blake Delagardelle claimed medalist honors with a 5-over-par round of 75, and Union’s Nash Schmidtz was second with a 76.
