SPORTS SHORTS: Riverhawks handle Bobcat boys tennis, 10-1
MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team closed out the regular season on the short side of a 10-1 decision against Class 2A No. 6 Mason City.
Elliot Kodis collected the lone win for the Bobcats (10-6), taking down Trenton Kruger in a three-set showdown at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 6-4, (10-5).
The Riverhawks (14-0) won the rest of the matches in straight sets. Marshalltown’s best challenges came in doubles competition, where the No. 1 pair of Caleb Rasmussen and Evan Roush fell 6-4, 7-5 to Kruger and Seth VandenBerg.
Kodis and Kyle Smith competed to within 7-5, 6-1 of Leif Lundberg and Jackson Squier at No. 2 doubles, while Aaron Hunter and Jacob Hayes fought to the end of their 6-0, 7-5 loss to Brock Anderson and Collan Kuhn at No. 4 doubles.
Marshalltown hosts its Class 2A district singles and doubles tournament on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at the Marshalltown Court Complex. The Bobcats also face Cedar Falls in the first round of substate dual play at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in West Des Moines.
Misek’s four-goal game lifts MHS at Ottumwa
OTTUMWA — Marshalltown sophomore Gavin Misek scored four goals and the Bobcat boys’ soccer team blasted Ottumwa 5-1 on Tuesday night at Tom Kopatich Field for its seventh-straight win.
Angel Gomez got the Bobcats’ other goal, while assists were credited to Andres Ordaz, Armando Estrada, Aaron Ordaz Zambrano and Damien Segovia.
Marshalltown (11-4-1) led 5-0 before Ottumwa (6-8-1) got on the board with a goal by Andy Nael Remilien.
MHS goalkeeper Jonathan Nunez made six saves in net for the win. The Bobcats closed the regular season with a 2-0 loss at Class 2A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Prairie on Thursday night.
