Strength of schedule sends Bobcat boys to fifth loss in last seven

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE - Marshalltown junior Parker Christen readies to make a backhand return during Friday’s non-conference match against Waverly-Shell Rock at the Marshalltown Court Complex.

The schedule didn’t steadily build up for the Marshalltown boys’ tennis team.

It ran headlong into a mountain, and the Bobcats haven’t been able to ascend fast enough.

Marshalltown played its seventh dual in the last eight days — all against teams ranked or receiving votes — and suffered its third-straight loss, falling 6-5 to Class 1A No. 5 Waverly-Shell Rock on Friday morning at the Marshalltown Court Complex.

After starting the season with eight wins in a row, the Bobcats (10-5) ran into the gauntlet of their schedule and got their noses bloodies in the process. MHS went 2-5 over the last week, though none of the losses came from below the Bobcats’ weight class.

Trying to punch up on Friday, Marshalltown couldn’t come up with the needed points and fell just short of the visiting Go-Hawks (6-3) a day after succumbing by matching scores of 10-1 to 2A No. 9 Ames and No. 3 Johnston.

“Honestly, I felt pretty good after yesterday,” MHS head coach James Christensen said following Friday’s home defeat. “Score-wise doesn’t really show it, but I thought we played really well in some spots and that gave me some options for postseason play — especially our doubles performance against Ames. I thought that was excellent.

“Both those teams are just a little better than us at each position. Tennis is a tough sport to pull an upset on since there’s so many points, but overall it gave me more positives than negatives.”

Feasting for the opportunity to get back on the court, the Bobcats were unable to match Waverly-Shell Rock’s level of play and fell behind 3-2 through doubles competition. Needing four singles wins to rally back for the dual, MHS came up just shy of an incomparable comeback.

“We had the opportunity today, we just didn’t do enough,” Christensen said.

Marshalltown got doubles wins from its Nos. 3 and 4 spots, starting with Jacob Seberger and Parker Christen with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Elijah Wheeler and Calvin Gunderson. Aaron Hunter and Jacob Hayes needed a deciding third-set super-tiebreaker to beat Fred Yang and Owen Neuendorf but got it done, 6-2, 2-6, (10-7).

Waverly-Shell Rock fired out fastest in singles play, but the Bobcats proved their mettle once again as displayed by Elliot Kodis at No. 2 singles and Christen at No. 6. Christen dropped the first set but came all the way back to keep the Bobcats alive, beating Neuendorf 1-6, 6-2, (10-8).

Kodis needed three sets to finish off Liam Jerome, scoring the 7-5, 5-7, (10-5) victory.

Caleb Rasmussen just missed his chance to force a deciding third set against Brady Willis, falling 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles spot.

“Anytime our guys end up in a close match, I feel like we have a good advantage in that our guys are, for the most part, grinders,” Christensen said. “They will dig in and do everything they can to win. I think we saw that with Parker and Elliot at the end. And Caleb was absolutely grinding — he’s down 2-5 in the second set and brought it back to 5-5. He was almost there.

“I trust my guys to get after it. We always say there’s no clock in tennis, you’ve gotta play til that final point and I think our guys do.”

Seberger scored a 6-1, 6-3 sweep of Yang to give MHS a 3-3 split in singles play, but it might have been the upset opportunity that got away for the Bobcats.

“We’ve had two different seasons of tennis,” Christensen said, “having played against the metro schools and then this last week, we played five really good teams in a row.

“And it’ll be six after Mason City.”

The Bobcats close the regular season with a road match at 2A No. 8 Mason City (12-0) on Tuesday. Marshalltown hosts its 2A district singles and doubles tournament on Saturday, May 16.
