Vasconez, Bulldogs put the boots to Bobcat girls

In a head-to-head matchup between two of Class 3A’s leading goal scorers, the Bulldogs got the best of the Bobcats.

Ottumwa senior Ilana Vasconez scored two second-half goals to finish off a hat trick in handing the Marshalltown girls’ soccer squad a 3-0 loss on Tuesday night at Leonard Cole Field.

Vasconez moved past MHS sophomore Claire Bonzer and into second place among 3A’s leading goal scorers with her 21st, 22nd and 23rd tallies of the season, powering Ottumwa (6-5-1) to its fourth-straight shutout victory.

Bonzer, with 21 goals this season, led a stern challenge in the second half, but the Bobcats (7-7-1) couldn’t break through. Ottumwa junior goalkeeper Blythe Schmidt made saves on six of Marshalltown’s eight shots after intermission, while the other two attempts — both by Bonzer — sailed just wide of the cage.

“I think we did everything right,” MHS head coach Kameron Nehring said. “We were trying to find the back of the net and they were pushing and shoving … and the ref kind of decided the game it seemed like tonight. Whatever went their way was always theirs and whatever went ours was never ours.

“Everything’s connecting well, we’ve just got to find the will to finish out strong.”

The Bobcats had five corner kicks in the second half alone, but couldn’t rally from the 1-0 halftime deficit that expanded along the way. Vasconez beat the Marshalltown defense in the 49th minute to make it 2-0, and she did it again with 7:24 remaining.

“She’s good and she’s fast,” Nehring said of Vasconez.

Marshalltown dipped to 0-2-1 in its last three matches heading into next Monday’s regular-season finale at home against Grinnell.

“I think we’re pretty healthy now for how many games we’ve played,” Nehring said. “We’ve got one more left on Monday with Grinnell, and then I think it’s about being able to recoup and just kind of get ready for regionals.”
