Weaver in the lead, Mustangs in the hunt

NEWTON — East Marshall senior Cody Weaver shot a 3-under-par 68 on Tuesday at Westwood Golf Course to take the clubhouse lead at the midpoint of the Class 1A boys’ state golf tournament.

Weaver had five birdies and two bogeys over the opening round, shooting a 3-under 33 on the front nine to lead the 80-player field going into Wednesday’s finale.

East Marshall, making its second-consecutive state tournament appearance, is in fifth place after the opening day with a 321 team total. Harris-Lake Park leads the 12-team tournament at 307, followed by Boyden-Hull and South Winneshiek (310), Earlham (318) and the Mustangs.

East Marshall senior Jackson Bidwell is tied for 19th place after shooting 79, Wyatt Stalzer finished in at 86, while Jaxson Boswell and Rylan Weaver both shot 88 to share in scoring honors. Austin Crandon carded an 89.

East Marshall is only 14 strokes out of first place heading into the final 18 holes of 1A play on Wednesday.

The Mustangs made their state debut as a team last spring and placed fifth in Class 2A at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo.

Trojans’ Polley in range

WATERLOO — Defending state champion Hunter Polley of West Marshall is tied for fifth place after shooting a 2-over-par 74 on the opening day of the Class 2A boys’ state golf tournament on Tuesday at South Hills Golf Course.

Polley, a senior and University of Dubuque recruit, shot a 1-over 37 on both the front and back nine, carding one birdie and two bogeys on both halves of the course. He is part of a four-way tie for fifth place.

Rock Valley junior Trey Swanson leads the field after shooting 70, West Branch’s McGavin Smith is second at 71, while Judd Jirovsky of Grundy Center and Benny Waller of Aplington-Parkersburg share third place at 73.

Waterloo Columbus leads Rock Valley, 305-307, at the front of the team standings going into Wednesday’s final 18 holes.
