All-Alliance for Bobcat sophomores
The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team had its third-straight double-digit winning season, and it won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
The Bobcats had nine players selected to the all-Iowa Alliance Conference North Division teams, and only two of them are seniors.
Sophomore defender Fatima Ramirez Rosas and sophomore forward Claire Bonzer both were named to the 13-player all-Alliance North first team at the conclusion of the spring season. It was the second-straight first-team selection for Ramirez Rosas, who was a unanimous pick a year ago.
Ramirez Rosas helped to anchor a Bobcat defense that allowed an average of fewer than three goals per game. Marshalltown pitched four shutouts during the season with Ramirez Rosas serving as one of the team’s sweepers.
Bonzer had a breakout sophomore season as one of the state’s premier goal-scorers, racking up a school-record 25 goals during Marshalltown’s 9-8-1 campaign. The Bobcats ranked 16th out of 40 teams in Class 3A with 47 goals this season.
Senior sweeper Jorja Janssen was one of three Bobcats named to the all-conference second team. Janssen, a first-team pick as a junior, shared the back line with Ramirez Rosas and helped anchor the Marshalltown defense.
MHS junior goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez was unanimously voted to the second team for the second consecutive season after finishing second in 3A and ninth in all classes with 243 saves this spring. She ranked 12th in 3A with an 82.1 save percentage and was fourth in minutes played.
Sophomore midfielder Itzabella Meraz earned her first all-conference honor in being a unanimous pick to the second team. Meraz scored three goals this season and converted her only penalty kick attempt as well.
Marshalltown’s assists numbers were not kept this spring.
Gaining honorable mention section for Marshalltown were senior forward Lilyia Christen, junior midfielder Gennese Tellez, sophomore midfielder Katie Gomez-Reyes and freshman defender Giahna Gomez.
Christen was third on the squad with five goals this season, while Tellez and Gomez-Reyes both tallied two goals.
