The Ames baseball team got its first wins of the season in a big way, beating Marshalltown 10-0 in five innings and 17-0 in four innings on Monday night at the MHS diamond.

The Little Cyclones (2-7, 2-2) pounded out 12 hits in the first game and 11 more in the second, securing the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division sweep.

Ames, with five seniors and four juniors in its starting lineup, also held Marshalltown (4-6, 1-3) to two hits in each game of the league twinbill.

In the opening game, the Little Cyclones scored seven times before the Bobcats came up to bat for the first time, chasing starting pitcher Luke Stalzer from the mound. MHS freshman Dane Hoogensen pitched the remaining five innings in relief, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits and two walks while striking out three.

Aiden Holmgren and Jalen Logsdon both had singles for the Bobcats, who went down swinging a combined nine times against Ames pitchers Erik Anderson and Leo Jensen.

In the nightcap, Ames pitcher Jackson Kepley struck out 10 and walked none in a four-inning two-hitter. Kinnick Niedermann and Wyatt Peters both picked up singles for Marshalltown, which didn’t advance a runner to third base all night.

MHS starting pitcher Larrs Schoenfelder surrendered eight runs — seven earned — before being relieved in the top of the second.

Ames senior Cullen Smith went a combined 6-for-6 at the plate during the doubleheader, compiling five doubles, a triple, four runs scored and eight RBIs.

The Bobcats go out on the road for their next two twinbills, visiting Fort Dodge on Wednesday and Des Moines Roosevelt on Thursday. Marshalltown is back at home on Monday, June 8, with two games against Des Moines Lincoln.

Starting at $4.38/week.
