The Marshalltown High School tennis program added more state meet experience to its resume.

Bobcat seniors Caleb Rasmussen and Ellie Downs and juniors Evan Roush and Kate Sandvick teamed up for the IHSAA/IGHSAU Class 2A State Co-Ed Tennis Tournament on Tuesday at the Marshalltown Court Complex, with each Bobcat tandem taking at least one win from another day at the net.

Sandvick and Rasmussen received a first-round bye before beating Ava Bashara and Brendan Fitzhugh of Dallas Center-Grimes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, but the Bobcats’ day ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Addison Latta and Vincent Flynn of Waukee Northwest.

Latta and Flynn went on to win the co-ed state title, taking every match in straight sets before prevailing by medical default in the finals over fellow Waukee Northwest preps Riley Hilton and Maarten Beekhuis. Latta and Flynn led 7-6 (7-3), 2-2 at the time.

On the other half of the bracket, Downs and Roush were bounced in first-round action against West Des Moines Valley’s Sophie Tannenbaum and Rohan Singaram, 6-1, 6-1.

In their lone consolation match, the Marshalltown pairing picked up an 8-6 victory over Cora Hatfield and Quin O’Bryan of Ames.

Rasmussen and Roush recently completed their spring season with a trip to the Class 2A state doubles competition in Iowa City, while Sandvick was a state doubles participant in the spring of 2025. Sandvick and then-senior Kennedy Feldman went 1-2, finishing one match away from the medals.

Starting at $4.38/week.
