Bulldogs fight off Bobcats for sweep
OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown softball team got the upper hand but couldn’t keep it in the second game of Tuesday’s Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader at Ottumwa and the host Bulldogs earned the sweep.
Ottumwa (19-6) won for the 25th time in the last 26 games in the series by beating the Bobcats 4-0 and 11-4 in the makeup game that was originally scheduled for June 10.
Adeline Thompson pitched a one-hitter for Ottumwa in the opening game, striking out 14 and walking only one in the win.
MHS junior hurler Emma Stupp and her defense limited the Bulldogs to three scoring innings despite nine hits. Stupp walked none and struck out five, with three of Ottumwa’s four runs coming earned as the Bobcats (10-14) made just one error.
Lily Garrison and Sophia Mendibles both had two hits, including a double, to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Charlotte Reyes had the Bobcats’ only hit — a single in the fifth.
In the nightcap, Marshalltown manufactured a run in the top of the first inning with a one-out walk to Abby Janssen and back-to-back singles for Briley Danielson and Leah Graves.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after eighth-grader Bristol Ealy connected for her first varsity home run — a two-run shot — in the top of the third.
Ottumwa answered with its first run in the home half, tacked on another in the fourth and exploded for seven runs in the fifth to take command.
Danielson took the loss, allowing eight runs — six earned — on 10 hits and seven walks over five innings, striking out three.
Graves and Stupp hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth to get MHS within 9-4, but that was all the Bobcats could muster.
Along with Ealy’s homer, Graves finished 3-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI to lead MHS. The Bobcats also got singles from Olivia Wise, Hanna Osgood, Danielson and Janssen.
Haydn Francis allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out seven in the win for Ottumwa.
