Bulldogs take a bite out of Bobcats
OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown baseball team was held to two hits over the course of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Ottumwa on Friday night.
Rescheduled from Wednesday, the twinbill was taken by the host Bulldogs by scores of 15-2 and 15-1, both in five innings, at Legion Memorial Field.
The youthful Bobcats (4-15) committed nine errors that led to 13 unearned runs, issued 20 walks or hit batsmen, and simply didn’t have enough offense to compete with Ottumwa (11-6).
The Bulldogs got out to a fast start in the opening game, sparked by Quinn Larsen’s grand slam in the second inning. An error prolonged Ottumwa’s at-bat, and Larsen fouled off three Jalen Logsdon pitches before finding one he could hit over the center-field fence.
Four of the seven runs allowed by Logsdon were unearned, while reliever Garrett Thede surrendered eight runs — three earned — in his two frames.
Marshalltown responded with its two-run at-bat in the top of the third, starting with a full-count walk to Luke Stalzer. Aiden Holmgren singled, Thede reached on an error that allowed Stalzer to score, and Logsdon plated Holmgren with a fielder’s choice.
Logsdon later singled for the Bobcats’ only other hit of the game and of the night.
In the nightcap, Ottumwa ran its win streak against Marshalltown to 11 in a row, sparked by 14 combined walks and hit batsmen from the Bobcat pitching staff. The Bulldogs got 15 runs on just five hits coupled with four errors.
William Overturf and Milo Canny combined on a four-inning no-hitter for Ottumwa, walking three and striking out six. Marshalltown’s only run came unearned as Quinn McLeod walked and scored when Larrs Schoenfelder’s bunt was misplayed.
The Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring four times, and racked up six runs after batting 11 in the third inning.
“Our defensive woes continued into tonight’s games at Ottumwa,” said MHS head coach Colton Hanke. “We gave up too many extra outs in multiple innings. We hope to get back into the groove of things for next week starting with Monday morning’s weightlifting.”
The Bobcats return to action Monday, kicking off a five-game homestand with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Des Moines North.
