The Marshalltown baseball team had as many hits as Fort Dodge had home runs as the Dodgers swept Thursday’s Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader at the MHS diamond.

Class 4A No. 9 Fort Dodge and its junior-heavy lineup hammered out a 16-0, four-inning win in the opening game before bagging a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.

Kolton Schiltz homered in both games of the twinbill and fellow junior Tru McBride homered in the second game to take the lead in the state’s home run race with his 11th of the season.

The Dodgers (27-7, 10-2) lead all classes with 33 home runs so far this summer.

Marshalltown pitchers Madden Martin and Luke Stalzer combined to issue nine walks in the opening game, helping the Dodgers’ cause, and the Bobcats (6-22, 1-11) committed five errors. Martin took the loss, allowing 11 runs — seven earned — on five hits and seven walks over two innings. He struck out three.

Larrs Schoenfelder had the Bobcats’ only hit against Fort Dodge junior right-hander Davis Underberg, who struck out five in the four-inning shutout. He walked Quinn McLeod and hit Wyatt Peters with a pitch, but those were the only three Bobcats to reach base.

Fort Dodge led 8-0 in Game 2 before Marshalltown got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Aiden Holmgren hit a leadoff single, Garrett Thede walked, both advanced on a wild pitch and Jalen Logsdon plated Holmgren with a groundout.

MHS added a run in the seventh when Martin singled and scored on a trio of wild pitches.

Thede took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on nine hits and three total walks while striking out two. Logsdon allowed an unearned run in two innings of relief, striking out two.

“In Game 1 we didn’t do enough of the small things and those added up against a good Fort Dodge team,” said MHS head coach Colton Hanke. “However, in Game 2, we threw the ball well and made plays which helped us compete throughout the game.”

Fort Dodge has won 14 straight in the series and 24 of the last 25 against the Bobcats.

Marshalltown is off until Wednesday, when it hosts Mason City for a 5 p.m. doubleheader. The ‘Cats close out Alliance play Thursday, July 2, with a twinbill at Waterloo East.

Starting at $4.75/week.
