Two local wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete on one of the biggest stages in the sport after their finishes at the Iowa Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships.

Marshalltown High School graduates Nick Wise and Ignacio Macias both finished in the top two in both distinctions at the state championships in May to advance to the Fargo Nationals on July 9-18 in Fargo, N.D.

Wise turned in an outstanding performance at the state meet, placing first in the Greco-Roman competition and second in freestyle. His success also earned him a spot on Team Iowa for the National Duals, where he will compete alongside some of the state’s top wrestlers against elite competition from across the country.

“Making Team Iowa and qualifying for Fargo in both styles has been a goal I’ve worked toward all year,” Wise said. “The competition in Iowa is tough, so earning these opportunities means a lot. I’m thankful for my coaches, teammates and family who have pushed me every step of the way. Now I’m focused on continuing to improve and representing Marshalltown and Iowa the best I can.”

Macias earned second-place finishes in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman competition, securing his qualification for the USA Wrestling National Championships in Fargo.

“Qualifying for Fargo is something I’ve been working hard for,” Macias said. “It’s exciting to have the chance to wrestle against the best athletes in the country. I’m grateful for everyone who has supported me, and I’m looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to represent Marshalltown.”

The annual Fargo tournament is widely regarded as the premier national event for high school-age freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers, attracting thousands of competitors from across the United States. Earning the opportunity to compete there is a testament to the athletes’ commitment, perseverance and success throughout the season.
