Roosevelt ties down Bobcat bats
DES MOINES — The Marshalltown softball team was held to two runs or fewer for the sixth time this season in a pair of losses at Des Moines Roosevelt on Thursday.
The Bobcats (2-7) held a short-lived lead in the opening game, getting their lone run in the top of the second inning. Emma Stupp reached with a leadoff single and Olivia Wise ripped a two-out double, plating courtesy runner Charlotte Reyes for the 1-0 lead.
Stupp would account for the team’s only other hit in the game, and Roosevelt (6-3) found its groove against her pitching. The Roughriders got three runs in the third, three in the fourth and three more in the fifth to finish off the game by the mercy rule, 9-1.
Stupp allowed five earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.
Tenley Thompson went 3-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs to lead the Roosevelt bats in support of fellow senior Grace Bell, who struck out 10 and walked none for the win.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats came up with just one hit against JaLeah Lee in a 10-0, four-inning defeat. Lee struck out five and walked one in the run rule-shortened victory, allowing only a second-inning single to Bristol Ealy.
Briley Danielson took the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits and five walks. Thompson went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer to again lead Roosevelt offensively.
Marshalltown is back at home on Monday, entertaining Des Moines Lincoln in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
