Roughriders top Bobcats in opener
DES MOINES — The Marshalltown baseball team has added to its offensive output, but the Bobcat defense is having a hard time getting outs.
Des Moines Roosevelt racked up 15 hits, including two home runs, in a 15-5, five-inning victory over Marshalltown in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader here Thursday.
The second game was suspended in the bottom of the second inning with the Bobcats (4-9) leading 1-0. No make-up date had been announced as of press time.
Five of Roosevelt’s 15 hits went for extra bases, highlighted by a three-run home run for Lucas Kelley in the first inning and a solo shot by Luther Cox leading off the second.
Marshalltown scratched out a run to take the initial lead in the top of the first after Jalen Logsdon walked and Garrett Thede reached safely on a bunt. Logsdon took home when Thede was caught stealing, but the Bobcat advantage didn’t last.
The Roughriders (7-7) scored eight runs in the home half, getting nine hits as Kelley’s homer chased MHS starting pitcher Aiden Holmgren from the mound. Eighth-grader Jefferson August made his varsity debut and surrendered Cox’s blast, but he escaped a bases-loaded situation without further damage.
The Bobcats fought back with three runs in the third. Eighth-grader Cayden Mares was hit by a pitch and Logsdon singled to chase Roosevelt starter Ethan Hall. Julian Nicolino then walked Thede, Holmgren and Madden Martin, and a one-out single by Quinn McLeod made it 9-4.
Roosevelt got five more runs in the fifth to regain control. MHS got one back in the fourth when Logsdon scored on Martin’s bases-loaded walk, but the Roughriders got out of the jam before ending the game with a run in the fifth.
Thede finished 2-for-2 with a walk and a run to lead the MHS offense, while Logsdon and McLeod had singles. Martin drove in two runs and Mares scored once as the Bobcats sent 12 players to the field — all of them sophomores or younger.
Kelley finished 3-for-4 with a double, a dinger and three RBIs to lead the Roughriders, who played all upperclassmen except for two-thirds of an inning pitched by a sophomore.
Marshalltown returns home to host Des Moines Lincoln for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Monday.
