SPORTS SHORTS: Adkins homers to help Mustangs pound AGWSR

LE GRAND — East Marshall sophomore Sophia Adkins hit her first career home run and the Class 2A No. 5 Mustang softball team smashed winless AGWSR 15-1 in four innings here Thursday in North Iowa Cedar League action.

Adkins was 2-for-2 with five RBIs, while Libby Atcher and Taylor Halverson added three hits apiece for the Mustangs (6-1). Atcher had two doubles and four RBIs in support of pitcher Peyton Grabenbauer, who struck out seven in a five-hitter.

AGWSR (0-9) scored its only run in the top of the first inning for a brief lead before the host Mustangs responded with five runs in the first and nine in the second.

East Marshall’s comeback falls short to AGWSR

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team couldn’t match AGWSR’s late surge in a 7-5 loss to the Cougars in Thursday’s North Iowa Cedar League clash.

The game was tied at 4-all before AGWSR (5-4) scored three times in the top of the seventh inning. East Marshall (3-6) got one run back but the comeback came up short.

Jackson Busch took the loss on the mound for the Mustangs, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits and three total walks while striking out six. Jace Johnson got the final three outs. Blake Neuroth went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a triple and four RBIs to lead the East Marshall offense. Cael Neuroth had two hits and scored three runs, while Landen Daugherty was 2-for-2 with a walk.

Comets outlast North Tama in Iowa Star softball

TRAER — The BCLUW softball team secured an early lead and held off North Tama for a 5-1 win in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

BCLUW hurler Eden Ladehoff struck out 15 in a three-hitter, allowing just one run in the complete-game performance. She also had two hits, including a triple, drove in a run and scored.

Leila Wedgwood was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Raine Sireno was 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Brayleigh Gardner hit an RBI double as well for the Comets (3-1). Alaney Sienknecht hit a solo home run for North Tama (3-2).

No. 9 West Marshall holds off Roland-Story rally

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 9 West Marshall softball team held off Roland-Story’s comeback for a 7-5 win in Wednesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference match.

The Trojans (7-2) led 7-0 after three innings but had to resist the Norsemen (4-2) the rest of the way. Cece Doyle hit a three-run homer in the fifth and Evelyn Carlson added a two-run shot in the seventh for Roland-Story.

Jenna Randall went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs to lead West Marshall offensively. Aubree Greenwood doubled to help her own cause, while Rachel Randall was 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored. Greenwood struck out six.

Mustang softball sustains first defeat in ranked clash

FAIRBANK — The Class 2A No. 5 East Marshall softball team suffered its first loss, falling 7-3 to No. 4 Wapsie Valley in Tuesday’s North Iowa Cedar League showdown.

The Mustangs (5-1) led 3-0 after scoring twice in the second inning, but Wapsie Valley (4-3) scored seven unanswered to take the win.

Warriors pitcher Taylor Buhr held the Mustangs to just four hits while striking out five for the win. Espyn Decker was 3-for-4 with two triples, a home run and three runs scored to lead Wapsie Valley.

East Marshall hurler Peyton Grabenbauer struck out seven, but four unearned runs proved costly. Gianna Boswell had a double, two RBIs and a run scored to lead the Mustang offense. Taylor Halverson hit a double, Grabenbauer had an RBI single and Libby Atcher added a hit.

GMG softball pulls past Riceville, 5-1

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team broke a 1-all tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 5-1 win over Riceville in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Skyler Murty went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored to lead the GMG offense. Tatum Jones was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Natalie Upah went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Piper Jones also doubled for the Wolverines, who overcame 10 strikeouts. Riah Boege allowed just three hits and an unearned run while striking out 18 in the win for GMG (3-3).

Trojan softball wallops Perry in conference play

PERRY — Aubree Greenwood pitched a two-hitter and the Class 2A No. 9 West Marshall softball team piled up 12 hits in a 20-1 triumph over Perry in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference game.

Rachel Randall was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Ashtyn Blood went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. Riley Randall was 2-for-3 with a run and four RBIs. Greenwood struck out five and walked only one in the conference win.
