SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat softball sweeps Mason City in league play
MASON CITY — The Marshalltown softball team rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning in the second game at Mason City to sweep the Riverhawks by scores of 5-3 and 7-6 on Thursday night.
The Bobcats (6-7, 4-4) claimed the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division doubleheader on the strength of timely hitting, provided in the first game by Olivia Wise. The sophomore infielder hit a two-run, two-out single in the third inning and an RBI single with two outs in the seventh to help MHS make good on its many chances.
Marshalltown stranded 10 runners on base in the opener and nine in the nightcap, but still managed to push enough runs across to support their pitchers.
Lauren O’Neal pitched three hitless innings to start, striking out seven and walking one, and Emma Stupp handled the final three frames. Mason City (4-9, 2-9) got three runs — one earned — against Stupp, who struck out four to earn the save.
Wise finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Briley Danielson was 3-for-4 with a run, and Stupp went 2-for-2 with an RBI double. Her courtesy runner Kamryn Price scored twice. Ella DeMonte added two hits and scored a run.
In Game 2, Mason City got the drop on the Bobcats by scoring four times in its first at-bat for a 4-1 lead. The Bobcats chipped away at the deficit, getting an RBI single by Danielson in the first, a two-run homer from Stupp in the third, and an RBI single by Abby Janssen in the fifth to tie it.
In the fifth inning, four-straight singles by Wise, Sommerlot, Kendall Brummel and Charlotte Reyes yielded just one run but gave the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.
Mason City got three hits in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-run single for Lexi Payne, to regain a 6-5 advantage, but the Bobcats weren’t done.
Down a run, Stupp was intentionally walked with one out and Hanna Osgood singled through the middle. O’Neal followed with a bunt single, Wise drove in the tying run with a hit, and Sommerlot followed suit with the go-ahead RBI single. A double play ended the Marshalltown rally, but the damage was done.
Stupp finished 2-for-2 with a double and a dinger, reaching base in all eight plate appearances on the night. Brummel, Reyes, Danielson, Wise and Sommerlot each had two of the team’s 15 hits.
Danielson allowed five earned runs on nine hits and five walks while striking out nine for the complete-game victory.
