SPORTS SHORTS: Comets close out Riceville in Iowa Star action

RICEVILLE — Eden Ladehoff and Wyllo Collins combined on a four-hitter and the BCLUW softball team got a couple of timely hits to take down Riceville 4-1 in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Brayleigh Gardner was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs, while Adelynn Zoske finished 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to help power the Comets (4-1). Leila Wedgwood had two hits, while Ladehoff doubled and scored. Collins and Carolyna White both singled and scored as well in the win.

Ladehoff struck out seven in six innings of three-hit ball, allowing one unearned run, and Collins gave up one hit in her scoreless inning of relief for the save.

West Marshall softball holds off hard-charging Cubs

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 9 West Marshall softball team withstood a late Nevada rally to take down the Cubs 5-4 in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

Nevada (7-5) scored twice in the top of the seventh, but their comeback fell just short of the Trojans (8-3).

Jenna Randall finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored to lead the West Marshall bats. Ashtyn Blood doubled and scored, while Cailyn Brown doubled to help her own cause.

Brown struck out six and walked seven over 6 1/3 innings for the win, allowing four runs on six hits. Aubree Greenwood struck out one of the two batters she faced for the save. Greenwood also singled in a run and scored, while Rachel Randall and Olivia Randall each drove in a run.

Rockford capitalizes on chances to topple GMG

ROCKFORD — The Rockford softball team had half as many hits as GMG but did more with them, beating the Wolverines 4-0 in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

The host Warriors (3-6) got just three hits but coupled them with three walks to get enough offense for the win. Hannah Hillman struck out 11 and hit a batter in the six-hit shutout.

Riah Boege struck out 14 but walked three batters in allowing three earned runs in the loss. Skyler Murty was 3-for-3 with a double to lead GMG (3-7) at the plate, but the run-scoring hits never came for the Wolverines. Boege, Bryleigh Bartel and Kaylee Beach each had singles.

Wolverines suffer road loss against Rockford

ROCKFORD — The GMG baseball team couldn’t recover after falling behind and fell 7-5 to Rockford in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference meeting.

GMG led 1-0 and 3-2 before Rockford (1-9) took the lead with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Wolverines (1-8) rallied to within 6-5 but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Drayson Stephenson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jay Bessman was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead GMG offensively. Jacoby Woodbury doubled and scored, while Ethan Klemesrud singled, scored and drove in a run.

Woodbury took the loss for the GMG pitching staff, allowing five runs — four earned — on three hits and five total walks while striking out nine in four innings.
