SPORTS SHORTS: East Marshall knocks off Durant in Williamsburg
WILLIAMSBURG — Peyton Grabenbauer pitched a one-hitter and the Class 2A No. 8 East Marshall softball team got a pair of solo home runs to knock off No. 2 Durant 2-1 on Saturday at the Williamsburg Tournament.
Grabenbauer struck out five and allowed one unearned run in the circle for the Mustangs (4-0). Home runs from Taylor Halverson in the fifth inning and Kayda Devig in the sixth sparked East Marshall’s offense to the win.
Miyah Grabenbauer and Reagan Halverson had two hits apiece for the Mustangs.
East Marshall opened the weekend by handing Wapello (4-1) its first loss, 8-3. Peyton Grabenbauer struck out 13 in a five-hitter and also homered, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Gianna Boswell and Miyah Grabenbauer added two hits apiece.
West Marshall softball has win streak snapped
PLEASANTVILLE — The Class 2A No. 10 West Marshall softball team had a four-game winning streak snapped by No. 12 Pleasantville as the host Trojans toppled the visitors 2-0 on Friday night.
Pleasantville junior Lainey Kennedy pitched a five hitter, walking two and striking out two for the win. Bella Sutter was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and scored a run in the host Trojans’ two-run second inning.
Hattie McCollum led West Marshall (4-2) with two hits, while Ashtyn Blood, Aubree Greenwood and Riley Randall each added a single. Greenwood took the loss in the circle, striking out seven while walking two.
Comets clobber Baxter in Iowa Star softball
BAXTER — The BCLUW softball team scored in six of seven at-bats in a 13-4 victory over Baxter in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
The Comets (2-0, 2-0) had 13 hits, including a pair of doubles for Layla Follett. Eden Ladehoff was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Follett and Adelynn Zoske had three hits apiece. Raine Sireno drove in three runs and scored twilce, and Wyllo Collins had a double and two RBIs.
Collins allowed one earned run on six hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out five for the win.
Des Moines Christian pulls away from West Marshall
STATE CENTER — Des Moines Christian used a nine-run fourth inning to break free from the West Marshall baseball team for a 15-3 victory on Friday night.
The Lions (3-3) rapped out 14 hits, including a home run for Carson Rounds. Brady Andrews, Jack Isenhart and Owen Gilbert had three hits apiece.
Des Moines Christian pitchers overcame a combined nine walks by holding West Marshall to three hits. Hunter Polley, Karver Christensen and Beckham DeSotel each singled for the Trojans (4-4), with Polley, Drake Whitaker and Turner DeRossett driving in runs. Christensen pitched 2 2/3 innings in a losing cause for West Marshall.
Grinnell gets past East Marshall baseball, 8-6
LE GRAND — Grinnell broke a 6-all tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning of an 8-6 victory over the East Marshall baseball team on Friday night.
Eli Burns went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, while Blake Neuroth was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jaxson Boswell added a double and two RBIs for the Mustangs (3-3).
Relief pitcher Landen Dougherty went four innings, allowing three runs — two earned — on three hits and three total walks for the loss. He struck out three.
Levi Jack went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead Grinnell (5-4).
Wolverines run past Royals in extra innings
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Colo-NESCO 3-2 in eight innings in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.
Relief pitcher Brayton Davis struck out three in two innings for the win in support of Ethan Klemesrud, who struck out 11 and walked seven over six innings. Klemesrud gave up just four hits.
Jay Bessman had two of GMG’s five hits, while Davis, Wilken Schmitz and Liam Stephenson each added a single. Davis drove in a run while Stephenson scored once and Easton Runner scored twice.
Baxter baseball pours it on against Comets
BAXTER — Baxter used a pair of big innings to beat BCLUW 16-0 in four innings in Iowa Star Conference baseball action here Friday.
The Bolts (4-2) jumped out to a 15-0 lead after two innings en route to the win. Baxter pitcher Colton Moffitt struck out seven and allowed only three hits.
Eathan Petermeier went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, while Maverick Grafke added a single for the Comets (1-2).
Grafke took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs on two hits and seven total walks over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.
Mustang softball smacks Sumner-Fredericksburg
LE GRAND — Peyton Grabenbauer pitched a three-hitter and Ashtyn Wheater homered to help the Class 2A No. 8 East Marshall softball team topple No. 9 Sumner-Fredericksburg 4-0 on Thursday night.
Wheater hit a two-run homer and Gianna Boswell had a two-run double to fuel the East Marshall offense, which was held to just six hits. It was plenty of support for Grabenbauer, who struck out 13, walked one and hit a batter.
Brown leads Trojan softball past Perry, 13-1
STATE CENTER — It only took four innings for the West Marshall softball team to hand Perry a 13-1 setback in Thursday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
West Marshall freshman pitcher Cailyn Brown struck out six and walked none in a seven-hitter. Brown also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and four RBIs to lead the Trojans’ 12-hit attack.
Rachel Randall finished 2-for-3 with a double and three runs, while Hattie McCollum was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Jenna Randall added two hits, two runs and two RBIs as the Trojans (4-1) built up a 13-0 lead after just three at-bats.
Karagyn Whelchel had two hits to lead Perry (0-5) in defeat.
Trojans outlast Aplington-Parkersburg on the diamond
PARKERSBURG — The West Marshall baseball team scored twice in the top of the seventh to help keep Aplington-Parkersburg at bay, beating the Falcons 5-2 in Thursday’s non-conference clash.
Riley Hanford went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to power the West Marshall offense. Drake Whitaker was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Hunter Polley singled and drove in a run. Polley struck out 10 in a complete-game five-hitter, walking three in the win for the Trojans (4-3).
Kingston Holman struck out 10 over six innings in a losing cause for Aplington-Parkersburg (0-2).
Mustangs chase off Cougars in NICL baseball
GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team finished off Sumner-Fredericksburg in five innings, beating the Cougars 10-0 in Thursday’s North Iowa Cedar League showdown.
Blake Neuroth pitched a one-hitter for the Mustangs, striking out six while walking three for the victory. Gavin Gaschler and Jackson Busch both went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, including a double for Busch. Neuroth had an RBI double and scored twice for East Marshall (3-2), which benefitted from seven total walks issued by Cougar pitching.
