SPORTS SHORTS: Eighth-ranked Mustangs win BGM triangular

BROOKLYN — The Class 2A No. 8 East Marshall softball team scored a pair of narrow victories on Saturday at the BGM Triangular, beating Twin Cedars 3-2 and the host Bears 5-2.

Against BGM, The Mustangs broke a 2-all tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Libby Atcher hit a solo home run to lead the East Marshall bats. Ashtyn Wheater had a single and two RBIs, while Peyton Grabenbauer had a double and drove in two runs. Taylor Halverson doubled twice while Amiya Kluck singled and scored in support of Grabenbauer, who struck out 13 and walked three in a three-hitter.

Cara Arment was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the host Bears (8-4). She walked four and struck out three from the pitcher’s circle.

East Marshall (10-2) got out to a 3-1 lead on Twin Cedars and held off the Sabers for a 3-2 triumph in the finale despite being outhit 7-5.

Taylor Halverson hit an RBI double, Reagan Halverson had an RBI single and Sophia Adkins drove in a run as well for the Mustangs. Peyton Grabenbauer hit a double, Miyah Grabenbauer singled, and Libby Atcher singled and scored twice to lead the way.

Peyton Grabenbauer struck out seven and walked four, scattering seven hits for the win.

Jordyn Greatbatch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Twin Cedars (5-8).

Comets cut down by Janesville baseball

JANESVILLE — The BCLUW baseball team was limited to just four hits in a 10-0, six-inning loss to Janesville in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference matchup.

The host Wildcats (8-1) got a combined nine strikeouts but six walks from pitchers Talan Pletz and Cael Coffman, each of whom threw three innings. Pletz was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Janesville offensively as well.

Will Feldpausch, Maverick Grafke, Nate Bishop and Daniel Zoske each had a hit for the Comets (2-7). Grafke took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs — five earned — on five hits and seven walks over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four.

DeSotel homers in West Marshall’s league win

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team never trailed in a 7-3 victory over Perry in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

Beckham DeSotel went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs to lead the Trojans (10-7) to victory. Evan Siegert singled and scored three times, and Riley Hanford added the team’s only other single. West Marshall benefitted from nine total walks issued by Perry pitching.

Karver Christensen struck out eight over six innings for the win, allowing three runs on three hits and six total walks. Hunter Polley pitched a perfect inning of relief to finish off the win.

BCLUW baseball breaks up 5-game skid

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team got out to a 7-1 lead and held off Dunkerton’s comeback attempt in a 7-6 win in last Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

Dunkerton (2-7) scored the game’s final five runs to rally within one, tallying three times in the seventh inning to close the final margin.

Daniel Zoske went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs to lead the Comets (2-6) offensively. Maverick Grafke tripled, drove in a run and scored, Marshall Caster doubled in a run, and Eathan Petermeier singled and scored twice.

Aiden Frank earned the win on the mound, allowing three runs in two innings with four strikeouts. Zoske pitched three scoreless innings as the starter, striking out two, as BCLUW ended a five-game losing streak.
