SPORTS SHORTS: Murty’s homer helps GMG to victory

BELLE PLAINE — GMG senior Rhianna Murty hit her first career home run and the Wolverines pounded out a 9-2 victory over Belle Plaine in Tuesday’s non-conference contest.

Murty finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs as GMG (7-12) tallied the win. Skyler Murty was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Piper Jones was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Addison Elmore went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Bryleigh Bartel added a double, an RBI and scored a run for the Wolverines. Winning pitcher Riah Boege struck out 11 and walked none, scattering nine hits for the complete-game victory.

Claire Neuhaus and Chloe Svoboda had two hits apiece to lead Belle Plaine (7-8).

Mustangs fall in extras

LE GRAND — The Class 2A No. 9 East Marshall softball team lost consecutive games for the first time this season, falling 5-1 in nine innings to Roland-Story on Tuesday night.

Both teams scored once in the sixth inning before the Norsemen (15-5) broke free in the top of the ninth. A pair of East Marshall errors allowed the tiebreaking run to score before Ali Johnson popped a three-run home run with two outs to make it 5-1.

East Marshall (15-5) got two of its four hits in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Miyah Grabenbauer singled and Ashtyn Wheater walked, chasing Roland-Story pitcher Cece Doyle from the circle. Miley Geise surrendered an RBI single to Peyton Grabenbauer on her second pitch, but that was all the damage done.

Sophia Adkins and Wheater had the Mustangs’ only other hits in the loss. Peyton Grabenbauer struck out eight, walked three and allowed six hits and one earned run from the circle for East Marshall.

Geise allowed two hits and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings for the win.

Trojans blanked by PCM

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall softball team was shut out for just the fourth time this season, falling 4-0 to Class 3A No. 7 PCM in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference showdown.

The visiting Mustangs (15-3, 11-3) moved into second place in the HOAIC standings behind Grand View Christian by earning the regular-season split with West Marshall (15-8, 10-4).

PCM sophomore Camden Webb struck out 10 and walked one in a no-hitter pitching performance, facing only one more than the minimum. West Marshall’s Aubree Greenwood allowed two earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six.

Kyra Naeve drove in two runs and Lillian Humpal had two hits for PCM.

Collins, Comets tame Janesville

JANESVILLE — The BCLUW softball team erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to topple Janesville 14-4 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

The Comets (7-8) led 6-4 before pouring it on, ending the game early by the mercy rule.

Eighth-grader Wyllo Collins was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Comets, while her courtesy runner Kara Hill scored three times. Collins also allowed just four hits and four unearned runs while walking two and striking out seven for the win.

Leila Wedgwood was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Brooke Ward was 1-for-3 with two runs. The Comets were on the receiving end of 12 walks and were twice hit by pitches.

Janesville (3-14) committed seven errors as only one run was earned to pitcher Katlyn Haan.

PCM pickles East Marshall

MONROE — Persistence paid off for PCM as the Mustangs gradually overtook the East Marshall baseball team for a 5-2 win in Tuesday’s non-conference clash.

East Marshall (5-15) led 2-1 after the second inning but host PCM (14-5) scored once in the third, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to slowly gain control.

Eli Burns hit a two-run single to drive in Gavin Gaschler and courtesy runner Kaden Grant to give East Marshall a 2-1 lead in the second. Gaschler and catcher Austin Crandon both reached on walks before scoring on the hit by Burns.

Landen Dougherty had the only other hit for the East Marshall. Senior pitcher Blake Neuroth pitched 5 2/3 innings in defeat, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five.

Izaac Bagby was 3-for-4 with a home run to lead PCM.

DeSotel helps Trojans topple Hawks

STATE CENTER — Beckham DeSotel pitched a one-hit shutout and the West Marshall baseball team backed him with just enough offense for a 4-0 win over South Hamilton in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference battle.

DeSotel struck out 13 and walked only one in the 72-pitch complete game. He also scored a run and drove in another for the Trojans (14-10, 8-7).

Turner DeRossett had a hit and Evan Siegert singled and scored, while Drake Whitaker and Hunter Polley both scored runs. Braxton Toyne was hit by a pitch three times and drove in a run as well. West Marshall was on the receiving end of 13 total walks issued by South Hamilton pitching.

Garrett Johnson had the lone hit for the visiting Hawks (0-15, 0-13).
