SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs edge J-Hawks in NICL play

JESUP — The East Marshall softball team got a preview glimpse into its potential Class 2A regional semifinal pairing when it beat Jesup 5-4 on Thursday night in North Iowa Cedar League play.

The 13th-rated Mustangs tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning that turned into the game-winner when Jesup (13-7, 7-3) rallied to within one in the home half.

Peyton Grabenbauer struck out 10, walked none and hit a batter while scattering seven hits in the win.

The Mustangs (16-6, 8-3) scored twice in the third inning to tie the score, getting a leadoff double from Reagan Halverson and RBI singles from Gianna Boswell and Grabenbauer.

Sophia Adkins and Boswell both singled and scored on a double by Ashtyn Wheater in the fifth, and Boswell doubled and scored on a Wheater groundout in the seventh for the eventual deciding run.

Boswell finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Wheater was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Halverson also had two hits and scored a run.

Losing pitcher Daley Donlea went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Jesup.

Mustangs mow down Hudson

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to an 11-1 triumph over Hudson (4-11) in Wednesday’s North Iowa Cedar League pairing.

The host Mustangs (6-15) scored in five of their six at-bats in support of sophomore pitcher Landen Dougherty, who allowed one run on three hits and three hit batsmen while striking out four.

Jackson Busch went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the East Marshall bats, and Dougherty helped himself by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Jaxson Boswell was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Tate Bjelland hit an RBI double as the Mustangs compiled 11 hits.

Trojans trounce ACA 17-2

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team scored at least two runs in each inning of its 17-2, four-inning beatdown of Ankeny Christian Academy in Wednesday’s non-conference game at Schilling Field.

Beckham DeSotel went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Trojans (15-10), who finished off the mercy rule victory with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Evan Siegert went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, while Turner DeRossett was 1-for-1 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Blayk Hart doubled, drove in a run and scored twice as the Trojans teamed seven hits with 16 total walks issued by ACA pitching.

Siegert went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Lucas Erickson had two hits to lead the Eagles (19-5).

Comets clobber Bolts 8-3

CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team started fast and finished off Baxter for an 8-3 win in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

The host Comets (8-8, 8-4) scored five times in their first at-bat and three more in their last to put away the Bolts (3-19, 1-13).

Wyllo Collins pitched five innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Eden Ladehoff struck out four in two perfect innings of relief to seal it.

Adelynn Zoske went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the BCLUW offense. Leila Wedgwood and Ladehoff both went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Collins was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Brayleigh Gardner added a single as the Comets coupled nine hits with 11 walks issued by Baxter pitching.

GMG softball stifles Colo-NESCO

MC CALLSBURG — The GMG softball team broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth inning of its 4-0 win over Colo-NESCO in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Skyler Murty went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Natalie Upah was 2-for-3 with a double and a run to lead GMG (8-12, 6-8). Kaylee Beach doubled in a run while Addison Elmore singled and scored for the Wolverines, who claimed their third-straight win.

Winning pitcher Riah Boege struck out 16 and allowed only two hits to the host Royals (0-16, 0-12).

West Marshall blanked by Norse

ROLAND — The West Marshall softball team suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season with Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat at Roland-Story.

The Norsemen (16-5, 9-3) had 12 hits and two walks but could only carve out one run against West Marshall hurler Aubree Greenwood, who struck out six.

Ali Johnson drove in Brookelyn Jondle as the game’s only run. Jondle finished 4-for-4 with a double and Klaire Krausman was 2-for-4 to support Miley Geise, who struck out 14 in a five-hit shutout.

Alayna Frederick doubled while Ashtyn Blood, Cailyn Brown, Olivia Randall and Greenwood each had singles for the Trojans (15-9, 10-5).

Royals rally past GMG

ZEARING — A four-run outburst by Colo-NESCO helped the Royals knock off the GMG baseball team 5-4 in Iowa Star Conference South Division action here Wednesday night.

GMG (3-15, 3-13) led 3-1 before the Royals rallied to take the lead for good.

Ethan Klemesrud allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked two before being relieved by Jacoby Woodbury, who surrendered two unearned runs and took the loss.

Jay Bessman and Woodbury had GMG’s only hits while Klemesrud, who was walked four times, scored three runs.

Hunter Purvis pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win for Colo-NESCO (7-10, 6-8), walking seven while striking out eight.

East Marshall pops Pirates

LE GRAND — Peyton Grabenbauer homered and pitched a one-hitter as the Class 2A No. 13 East Marshall softball team handled Hudson 10-0 in four innings on Wednesday in North Iowa Cedar League play.

Grabenbauer finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, a home run and four RBIs. In the pitcher’s circle, she allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out nine.

Gianna Boswell went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Sophia Adkins doubled and drove in two runs for East Marshall (16-5). Miyah Grabenbauer and Ashtyn Wheater both doubled, drove in a run and scored as well.

Hannah Chardoulias had the lone hit for the visiting Pirates (7-10).
