SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs fall to Spartans in family coaching clash

GRUNDY CENTER — Macey Kiewiet homered to help Grundy Center to a 4-1 win over Class 2A No. 9 East Marshall in Monday’s North Iowa Cedar League softball showdown at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex.

Kiewiet finished 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead the Spartans (14-5, 7-4), who are coached by former East Marshall standout Kodie (Hoskey) Sternhagen. Maddy Hendershot singled twice, stole two bases and scored twice while also pitching all seven innings in the win. She struck out four and walked two, scattering seven hits.

Gianna Boswell went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for East Marshall (15-4, 7-2), who is coached by Sternhagen’s father Jary Hoskey. Peyton Grabenbauer was 2-for-3 at the plate, Ashtyn Wheater hit a double and Amiya Kluck singled and scored.

Grabenbauer struck out five and hit two batters in the loss.

Homers help Trojans trample Hawks

STATE CENTER — Aubree Greenwood pitched a three-hit shutout, Cailyn Brown hit a grand slam and Rachel Randall ended West Marshall’s 11-0 win over South Hamilton (5-17, 1-10) with a two-run homer in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.

Greenwood struck out eight, walked none and allowed only three singles in the four-inning victory.

Offensively, Brown hit an RBI single in the first inning made it 9-0 with her grand slam in the fourth. Two batters later, Randall rocked a two-run shot to walk it off.

Hattie McCollum finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, Brown was 2-for-3 with five RBIs, and Randall was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run for the Trojans (15-7, 10-3).

East Marshall stumped by Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER — Judd Jirovsky struck out 10 in six innings and Britt Meyer fanned all three batters he faced to help Class 2A No. 8 Grundy Center beat East Marshall in a North Iowa Cedar League baseball game here Monday night.

Jirovsky scattered six hits and one walk for the win, allowing an East Marshall tally in the top of the fifth. The Spartans (12-2, 10-2) needed just three hits to score their four runs, capitalizing on five walks.

Jackson Busch struck out three over five innings, allowing four runs on three hits and four total walks. Landen Dougherty pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Mustangs (5-14, 2-8).

Tate Bjelland was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead East Marshall, driving in courtesy runner Kaden Grant. Eli Burns, Blake Neuroth, Austin Crandon and Dougherty all hit singles.
