SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans overtake PCM for Heart of Iowa win

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team assembled a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to overtake PCM (8-3, 5-3) for a 10-7 victory in Wednesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference showdown. The game was called before the start of the seventh inning due to weather.

Beckham DeSotel homered and scored three times to help West Marshall (9-7, 5-6) come back for the league win. Evan Siegert doubled and scored, Hunter Polley doubled and drove in two runs, and Karver Christensen was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Riley Hanford added two hits, scored a run and drove in another to help the Trojans prevail.

Wildcats hand GMG baseball its ninth loss in a row

JANESVILLE — The Janesville baseball team sent GMG to its ninth-straight loss, beating the Wolverines 15-1 in five innings in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Three GMG pitchers issued a combined 12 walks or hit batsmen in the loss, surrendering eight hits while the defense committed five errors.

Jay Bessman drove in GMG’s only run with a third-inning single, plating Drayson Stephenson. Stephenson walked twice and reached on an error. Ethan Klemesrud, Easton Runner and Wilken Schmitz both added singles for the Wolverines (1-10, 0-8).

Grant Destival struck out six in five innings pitched for Janesville (7-1, 6-1), which won its sixth-straight.

No. 8 Mustangs mow down Waterloo Columbus

WATERLOO — The Class 2A No. 8 East Marshall softball team hammered out 12 hits in a 7-2 win over Waterloo Columbus in Wednesday’s North Iowa Cedar League tilt.

Taylor Halverson went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored, and her pinch-runner Quinn Burns also scored once. Gianna Boswell had two hits and two RBIs, while Amiya Kluck doubled twice and scored a run. Ashtyn Wheater had two hits and scored once, while Sophia Adkins doubled, drove in two runs and scored another.

Peyton Grabenbauer allowed just three hits and struck out 12 to help offset seven total walks in the complete-game pitching win for the Mustangs.

Janesville overtakes GMG softball team, 4-2

JANESVILLE — Host Janesville scored the final three runs of the game to overtake the GMG softball team for a 4-2 victory in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference matchup.

GMG (4-8) led 2-1 after three innings but didn’t score again, and the Wildcats (3-7) made their comeback. Janesville pitchers Katlyn Haan and Danica Brinkman combined to allow just two hits but surrendered 11 total walks while striking out 10.

Riah Boege singled and Skyler Murty doubled for GMG’s hits, and Grace Mathern charted GMG’s only RBI. Natalie Upah and courtesy runner Bryleigh Bartel both scored.

Boege struck out 14 but allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks in the loss.

Trojans fall to Thunder in ranked HOIAC softball

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 9 West Marshall softball team couldn’t keep up with Heart of Iowa Conference frontrunner Grand View Christian and fell to the 12th-ranked Thunder 4-0 on Tuesday night.

Grand View Christian (10-1, 8-0) scored once in the second inning, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to get all the offense it needed behind pitchers Chloe Cox and Eperlie Weitzel. Cox allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four over 6 1/3 innings, and Weitzel retired the last two batters to get the save.

Harper Rosado homered to lead GVC’s eight-hit attack that included RBI doubles for Sophie Bird and Morgan Pelham.

Ashtyn Blood had two of West Marshall’s four hits, including a double, while Rachel Randall and Olivia Randall added singles. Aubree Greenwood struck out five and hit a batter in suffering the loss for the Trojans (8-4, 7-2).

Grabenbauer homers, hits homer in East Marshall win

LE GRAND — The Class 2A No. 5 East Marshall softball team used a six-run eruption in the third inning to pull away from Iowa Valley in an eventual 10-0, four-inning victory in Tuesday’s non-conference tilt.

Peyton Grabenbauer pitched a two-hit shutout and homered to lead the Mustangs (7-2) to victory. She struck out 11 and walked three in the pitcher’s circle, and at the plate she went 2-for-2 with a walk and a double, a home run and four RBIs.

Libby Atcher was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI as East Marshall piled up 12 hits. Ashtyn Wheater went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

Elmore homers, Boege pitches GMG to victory

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team used a seven-run third inning to help rack up a 10-0, four-inning victory over South Tama in Tuesday’s non-conference clash.

Sophomore pitcher Riah Boege struck out eight of the 12 batters she faced to lead the Wolverines (4-7) to the win, while Addison Elmore hit a two-run homer.

Kaylee Beach finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and two RBIs, while Piper Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Skyler Murty was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as well against the winless Trojans (0-10).

Rebels run away and hide from Wolverines

GREEN MOUNTAIN — Gladbrook-Reinbeck got out to an 11-0 lead and held off the GMG baseball team for an 11-5 triumph in Tuesday’s non-conference tilt.

The visiting Rebels (3-6) were beneficiaries of 10 total walks issued by GMG pitching, and the Wolverines committed nine errors defensively.

Ethan Klemesrud took the loss for his five innings pitched, allowing nine runs — three earned — on four hits and eight total walks while striking out nine. Drayson Stephenson struck out two and walked two in two innings, allowing no hits but two runs — one earned.

Easton Runner had two hits and an RBI to lead the GMG offense. Brayton Davis singled in a run and scored twice, while Jacoby Woodbury had an RBI single as well. Cullen Elmore and Stephenson both singled as well for the Wolverines (1-9), who suffered their eighth-straight defeat.

West Marshall baseball splits twinbill with Nevada

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team split its Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader at home against Nevada on Monday night, winning the opener 11-4 before falling 8-3 in the nightcap.

The host Trojans (8-7) scored all 11 of their runs in the first game in innings 4-5 to open up a big lead.

Turner DeRossett went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the West Marshall offense. Blayk Hart doubled and scored, while Karver Christensen singled, walked twice and drove in three runs.

Beckham DeSotel pitched all seven innings for the Trojans, allowing two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out nine for the win.

Nevada (8-4) struck for three runs in the first inning again in the second game to take a lead it never relinquished. The Cubs had 10 hits to West Marshall’s four in the nightcap, with Drake Hinson going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead.

Three of the Trojans’ four hits were doubles — one each for Hunter Polley, Hart and DeRossett. Polley took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on eight hits and six total walks over five innings, striking out five.
