SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall walks off 1A No. 1 CRB
Riley Hanford’s single to left field drove in Hunter Polley as the game-winning run, lifting the West Marshall baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Class 1A No. 1 Coon Rapids-Bayard in the finale of Saturday’s Brent Prange Classic at Saydel High School.
The Trojans (16-12) led 5-0 before the Crusaders came alive offensively, forcing a 6-all tie through six innings. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Hanford came through.
Polley finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Hanford was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Evan Siegert went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and his first home run of the season. Beckham DeSotel had the team’s only other hit as West Marshall worked 10 total walks from the CRB pitching staff.
Polley pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs — four earned — on seven hits and two walks while striking out three in a no-decision. Drake Whitaker tossed the five 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts for the win.
West Marshall managed just one hit in its 1-0 loss to Boone in Saturday’s opener at Ankeny High School. The Toreadors (12-9) got a seven-inning gem from Conor Scoggins, striking out seven and walking two for the win.
DeSotel gave up just three hits, a walk and one unearned run in four innings for the loss.
Mustangs win third in a row
GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team got its third-straight win, beating Denver 10-0 in five innings here Friday night in North Iowa Cedar League play.
Jackson Busch pitched a two-hit shutout, walking three and striking out four in the complete-game performance for the Mustangs (8-15, 5-8).
Jaxson Boswell backed him with a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Blake Neuroth doubled and drove in two runs, while Eli Burns was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored to help defeat the Cyclones (6-12, 6-7).
Comets stumped by Spartans
MAXWELL — The BCLUW baseball team suffered its seventh-straight loss, falling 13-1 in five innings to Collins-Maxwell on Friday in Iowa Star Conference play.
Eighth-grader Brylee Haywood singled and walked for the Comets (2-13, 2-13), while Damian Halladay walked and scored the team’s only run. Starting pitcher Maverick Grafke surrendered seven runs in the first inning to take the loss, allowing two hits, walking five and striking out two.
Easton Bergmann pitched four innings for the win, allowing no hits and two walks while striking out nine for the Spartans (12-10, 11-4).
Bolts beat back GMG
BAXTER — Baxter scored in small bursts to put away the GMG baseball team 5-1 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
The Bolts (14-6, 11-4) scored twice in the third inning and once in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames to finish off the Wolverines (3-16, 1-14) in league play.
Ethan Klemesrud went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead GMG, which had just five singles offensively. Jacoby Woodbury singled and scored, while Drayson Stephenson and Brayton Davis both added a hit.
Davis and Woodbury split the pitching duties for GMG but walked a combined 10 batters in the loss. Hayden Burdess had two of Baxter’s five hits, including a triple, and scored twice.
Colton Moffit and Cael Wishman combined to strike out 14 for Baxter.
Carlisle rallies past Trojans
CARLISLE — Class 3A No. 6 Carlisle got a walk-off, three-run home run from Carter Berg to beat the West Marshall baseball team 5-3 in Friday’s non-conference contest.
West Marshall (15-11) scored the game’s first three runs before Carlisle (16-7) countered with a two-run homer for Owen Johnson in the fourth and the game-winning bomb by Berg in the seventh.
Karver Christensen pitched into the seventh, getting two outs before getting into trouble. Beckham DeSotel relieved him but walked the first batter he faced before Berg connected for the walk-off shot.
Christensen scattered eight hits over 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three walks while striking out six. He also had two hits and drove in two runs for the Trojans.
Drake Whitaker was 2-for-3 as well, while Evan Siegert and Riley Hanford both singled and scored. Hunter Polley was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Braxton Toyne and DeSotel added hits.
Brady McGriff pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win for Carlisle, giving up one hit while striking out five.
Wolverines turn back Baxter
BAXTER — The GMG softball team scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to put away Baxter for a 5-1 win in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division matchup.
Riah Boege pitched a four-hitter for the Wolverines (9-12, 7-8) as they claimed their fourth consecutive victory. The sophomore walked one and struck out 14, while also aiding her own cause offensively. Boege was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Natalie Upah led the way with three hits and an RBI.
Skyler Murty and Grace Mathern both had two hits and scored a run, while Rhianna Murty added two singles. Kaylee Beach doubled home a run and scored, and Tatum Jones singled and scored as well.
Baxter (3-20, 1-14) used three pitchers but couldn’t avoid its 11th loss in a row.
