Trojans top Mustangs at Don Bosco tourney

GILBERTVILLE — The West Marshall softball team went 3-1 at the Don Bosco Tournament on Saturday en route to the silver bracket championship, beating Class 2A No. 13 East Marshall in the finale.

East Marshall went 2-2 during the tournament, electing to save senior pitcher Peyton Grabenbauer for Tuesday’s intra-county clash at West Marshall.

Thanks to an efficient opener to Saturday’s bracketed play, West Marshall (18-10) put the ball back in junior pitcher Aubree Greenwood’s hands, and she delivered. Greenwood pitched a four-hit shutout, walking one and striking out four, as the Trojans took the win 9-0 in five innings.

Greenwood twirled just 76 pitches in West Marshall’s 8-1, six-inning win over Belmond-Klemme to start the day. She struck out six and walked one, allowing three hits and one unearned run in the victory.

Cailyn Brown was 3-for-3 with an RBI double and a two-run triple to lead the Trojan attack, while Hattie McCollum had two hits and scored twice. Jenna Randall, Ashtyn Blood and Riley Randall all doubled.

Against East Marshall (19-7), the Trojans had 10 hits against freshman Lexi Novotny, who appeared in the circle for just the second time all season. Novotny walked four and struck out two in the loss.

Jenna Randall went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while McCollum, Brown and Rachel Randall had two hits apiece. Rachel’s two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the first inning gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead, and they scored in all four of their at-bats in the win.

Novotny’s first appearance pitching for East Marshall was in Saturday’s opener — a 14-11 win against Jesup. The two teams met on Thursday — a 5-4 Mustang win — and neither team sent their ace pitcher to the circle.

East Marshall scored six runs in the top of the fourth to break an 8-all tie and held off Jesup’s retaliation in the final frame due to the tournament’s time limit.

Reagan Halverson went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Mustang offense. Peyton Grabenbauer was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, while Miyah Grabenbauer was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Gianna Boswell had two hits and two RBIs, and Sophia Adkins was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

East Marshall opened the tournament on Friday with a 12-2, four-inning win over Riceville. Peyton Grabenbauer pitched a three-hitter and Miyah Grabenbauer was 3-for-3 with a two-run double and a grand slam. Libby Atcher added a three-run homer, Ashtyn Wheater was 3-for-3 with a double, and Taylor Halverson had three hits.

Don Bosco edged the Mustangs 6-4 in the next round, scrambling up a four-run at-bat in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Peyton Grabenbauer hit a two-run double, while Wheater and Boswell both added run-scoring singles.

West Marshall’s tournament opened with a 5-1 loss to Denver. The Cyclones (17-6) broke a 1-all tie with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to score the victory. Mylee Thurm’s sacrifice fly broke the tie, and Addie Brauman’s three-run triple solidified Denver’s lead.

The Trojans got just one hit — a leadoff single from Jenna Randall — against Denver pitcher Jenna Collins. Rachel Randall walked and scored on an error in the fifth to tie the score. Collins struck out 13.

West Marshall made a winner out of eighth-grade pitcher Luella Fischer in her varsity debut, beating Hudson 6-5 in Friday’s second round. The Trojans trailed 5-1 before scoring three times in the fifth, once in the sixth and again in the seventh to rally to victory.

Jenna Randall led off the seventh with a single and scored all the way from first when McCollum’s bunt was misplayed on the very next pitch.

Blood hit a two-run home run in support of Fischer, who walked four but struck out nine in her three-hitter. Hudson (7-11) got all three hits, four walks and five runs in the second inning, which was the outlier to the other six perfect innings for Fischer.

Starting at $4.75/week.
