West Marshall wallops Tigers, 20-5
CONRAD — West Marshall’s errors led to a couple of big hits. South Hardin’s errors paved the way for a couple huge innings.
The West Marshall softball team broke open a close game with a 10-run explosion en route to a 20-5, four-inning victory over South Hardin in the opener of BCLUW’s Dave Lee Classic on Friday in Conrad.
The Trojans (9-4) tacked on another six runs in the top of the fourth to push the game past the mercy rule, propelled in both big at-bats by South Hardin errors.
The Tigers (0-11) led 2-1 after a two-run home run by Charlee Rosonke in the bottom of the first, but the game had gotten out of hand by the time Lucy Anderson launched her three-run homer in the home half of the third.
South Hardin’s 3-4-5 hitters accounted for five of the team’s seven hits and all of its runs, but the Tigers couldn’t keep up with West Marshall on this day.
The Trojans tallied 12 hits and capitalized on 10 walks and two hit batsmen issued by South Hardin pitchers Addi Rieks and Makenna Warburton. Rieks took the loss, allowing eight hits and nine total walks over three innings, though only five of her 14 runs allowed were earned.
West Marshall scored six times after a dropped fly ball should have served as the final out of the Trojans’ 10-run third inning.
Jenna Randall’s bases-loaded fly ball found the ground and allowed all three Trojan runners to score. Cailyn Brown followed with an RBI single, Riley Randall walked, and Alayna Frederick lifted a two-run double to center. Back-to-back walks to Samantha Sorsen and Brynn Kemmerer were followed by a trio of wild pitches, allowing all three runners to score before the final out was recorded.
Frederick and Kemmerer both had two-run singles in the fourth and Olivia Randall added an RBI single to help the Trojans break the game wide open.
Aubree Greenwood welcomed all the offensive support, pitching all four innings for the win. She struck out five and walked none while allowing seven hits.
Hattie McCollum was 3-for-5 with three stolen bases and three runs scored, while Frederick, Kemmerer and Olivia Randall had two hits apiece. The Trojans totaled 12 stolen bases.
West Marshall is back in action Saturday in Conrado with a 10 a.m. game against Grundy Center and an 11:45 a.m. contest against AGWSR.
