The West Marshall softball team saw firsthand how a senior can lead.

Trojan shortstop Rachel Randall put up the numbers during Heart of Iowa Conference play to help her team compete in the top half of the competition-rich league, earning first-team all-conference honors for the first time.

Randall was joined on the all-HOIAC first team by a part of West Marshall’s next wave of talent in freshman first baseman/pitcher Cailyn Brown, who garnered her first accolade at the end of a breakout campaign.

Randall and Brown represented two of the Trojans’ eight all-conference honorees after West Marshall finished the summer ranked No. 14 in Class 2A following a fourth-place finish in the Heart of Iowa.

Randall and Brown both batted .429 during HOIAC play, which for Randall was a 96-point boost from her overall performance. She hit four doubles and one home run to go with 14 runs scored and six RBIs, posting a team-leading .538 on-base percentage. Defensively, Randall had a .899 fielding percentage, earning the promotion to the first team after back-to-back summers on the second team.

Brown boosted the Trojan bats with team highs of three triples, three home runs and 24 RBIs during league play, ranking first, fifth and second in respective conference statistics. She also racked up a 2-1 record in the circle, posting a 2.88 earned run average with 15 strikeouts in 17 innings.

West Marshall was also represented by four second-team all-conference selections in senior catcher Riley Randall, junior pitcher Aubree Greenwood, junior infielder Jenna Randall and freshman outfielder Hattie McCollum.

Riley Randall threw out 4-of-10 attempted base-stealers against her during league games and made only one error to finish with a .991 fielding percentage. She posted a .206 batting average with nine RBIs, moving up from last year’s honorable mention selection.

Greenwood gained her fourth all-conference honor after going 9-4 in the circle with a 1.68 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched. A two-time first-team selection, Greenwood also contributed a .295 batting average with two doubles and 10 RBIs.

Jenna Randall earned her third all-conference accolade a year after an injury kept her out of the lineup. She batted .333 with a team-leading six doubles to go with one home run, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored. Jenna was 9-of-10 in stolen-base attempts and had a .935 fielding percentage at second base.

McCollum batted second for the Trojans most of the summer, helping to set the table with a .426 batting average and a .534 on-base percentage. McCollum scored a team-high 23 runs in league play, adding two doubles, a triple and 10 RBIs while swiping 10 bases.

Honorable mention honors went to junior Olivia Randall and freshman Ashtyn Blood. Olivia hit .229 in league play with one double, seven RBIs and nine runs scored. She had an .882 fielding percentage at third base.

Blood, the Trojans’ everyday center fielder, batted .311 with five doubles, one home run, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored in earning her second consecutive honorable mention award.

Grand View Christian won the Heart of Iowa title with an unbeaten 16-0 mark before going all the way to the 2A state title this week in Fort Dodge. PCM and Roland-Story tied for second place at 12-4, followed closely by West Marshall at 11-5.
