Mustangs denied by Warriors

FAIRBANK — The East Marshall softball team suffered its first and last losses this season to the same team.

Eighth-ranked Wapsie Valley capitalized on four Mustang errors and advanced to the state tournament with an 8-3 victory over East Marshall in Monday’s Class 2A Region 8 final at Wapsie Valley High School.

Lola Destival hit a three-run home run to put icing on the Warriors’ regional title, launching Wapsie Valley (18-7) into next week’s state field in Fort Dodge with her fifth-inning round-tripper.

East Marshall (23-10) scored its last run in the top of the seventh to close the final margin, leaving the Mustangs short of their third consecutive regional championship.

Seven of Wapsie Valley’s eight runs came unearned to Mustang pitcher Peyton Grabenbauer, who struck out two, walked four and hit two batters in the loss. East Marshall outhit the Warriors, 7-6, but couldn’t atone or too many defensive miscues.

The Mustangs held a shortlived lead after tallying two runs in the top of the second inning. Reagan Halverson singled, Sophia Adkins walked and Amiya Kluck hit a two-run, two-out double to left-center field.

Wapsie Valley scored seven runs before East Marshall got on the board again, starting with three unearned runs in the second and Destival’s three-run homer in the fifth.

Gianna Boswell singled and scored on Ashtyn Wheater’s groundout in the seventh for East Marshall’s final tally.

Kluck went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Mustang bats. Halverson, Boswell and Grabenbauer all singled, while Wheater doubled.

Taylor Buhr pitched four innings for the win, and Autumn Kress tossed the final three frames for the Warriors. They combined to walk two and struck out five. Espyn Decker had two of Wapsie Valley’s five hits, including a triple.

Starting at $4.75/week.
