SPORTS SHORTS: 13th-ranked Trojans overtake Ogden
OGDEN — The Class 2A No. 14 West Marshall softball team smacked 16 hits and sped past Ogden for a 12-6 victory in a non-conference clash on Wednesday night.
The host Bulldogs (20-15) scored five times in the first inning and led until West Marshall’s persistence finally overtook them in the fifth. The Trojans (21-10) scored the game’s last eight runs to rally for the win.
West Marshall got at least one hit and an RBI from all nine spots in the batting lineup, led by Cailyn Brown going 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.
The Trojans capitalized on three-straight Ogden errors to start the fifth, and winning pitcher Aubree Greenwood drove in Brown on a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run. Olivia Randall followed with an RBI single, and West Marshall tacked on four runs in the seventh to cinch the win. Of the team’s six hits in the seventh, Samantha Sorsen’s two-run double was the biggest blow. Ashtyn Blood followed with a run-scoring double and Brown’s RBI single took the score to its final.

Mustangs mash 3 homers in win
CONRAD — The East Marshall softball team hit three home runs to break free from BCLUW for a 7-2 victory in Wednesday’s non-conference showdown.
The visiting Mustangs (20-9), who surrendered three home runs in a loss to West Marshall a night earlier, got two solo homers from Ashtyn Wheater and a two-run shot from Libby Atcher in overtaking the Comtes (10-12).
Wheater’s solo home run to lead off the fourth inning tied the score at 1-all, and her homer in the seventh was a part of the Mustangs’ four-run at-bat. Peyton Grabenbauer doubled and scored on Atcher’s homer five pitches later to bring the score to its final.
Wheater and Grabenbauer had two hits apiece and East Marshall capitalized on five walks issued by BCLUW hurler Eden Ladehoff. Grabenbauer allowed just three hits and two unearned runs on three walks while striking out nine. Ladehoff struck out 12 in the loss.
Ladehoff singled and scored on a misplayed grounder off the bat of Adelynn Zoske in the third, giving the Comets a 1-0 lead, and BCLUW tied it up at 2-all in the fifth on Zoske’s RBI single.

STATE CENTER — A 14-run third inning was just enough offense to power the West Marshall baseball team to a 15-11 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg in Tuesday’s non-conference tilt at Schilling Field.
The host Trojans (17-12) trailed 5-0 before scoring 14 times in the third. Aplington-Parkersburg (11-11) outscored West Marshall 6-1 the rest of the way, but the damage had already been done.

Walk-off wild pitch lifts Comets
BEAMAN — Damien Halladay scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as BCLUW outlasted North Tama 14-13 in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division baseball game at Byron Rhodes Field.
The Comets (3-13, 3-13) ended a seven-game losing streak in the process, withstanding North Tama’s rally to win in extras. The Redhawks (8-10, 6-8) scored four times in the top of the seventh to tie the game, but BCLUW made the plays it needed to in the end.
Halladay led off the ninth with a four-pitch walk, took second on Mason Leib’s sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on Eathan Petermeier’s two-out grounder to short. The Redhawks made a play on Halladay at third, but the ball got away from Maddox Rausch.
Kadeyn Velasco’s first pitch to Maverick Grafke bounced in front of catcher Kayvin Morris, and the throw back to the plate got away from Velasco as Halladay slid in as the game-winning run.
Petermeier finished 5-for-7 at the plate with a double, a triple, three RBIs and five runs scored, while Will Feldpausch was 5-for-6 with two doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored. Halladay and Grafke had two hits apiece, with Halladay driving in two runs.

Skyler Murty went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs, while Tatum Jones was 2-for-4 with her first career home run and three RBIs to lead the Wolverines.
