MARTENSDALE — Martensdale-St. Marys got a leg up with a four-run fourth inning en route to a 6-1 victory over the BCLUW softball team in Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinals.

The Blue Devils (14-15) led 1-0 before scoring four times in the fourth. BCLUW got its only run in the fifth before MSM tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.

The Comets (11-13) were limited to four singles in their season-ending defeat. Brooke Ward reached on an error and scored on Carolyna White’s hit in the fifth inning. Ward, Eden Ladehoff and Wyllo Collins each added hits for BCLUW.

Martensdale-St. Mary’s pitcher Maclaine German struck out nine, walked none and hit a batter in the win. Ladehoff struck out 11 and walked three, allowing 10 hits in a losing cause for the Comets.

Ella Cassady was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Blue Devils into Friday’s regional semifinals against Ankeny Christian Academy (22-3).
